Ground breaking

What does this book say that is different than what has gone before? Heaps. In recent years it has become clear that Germany lost the second world war because the Soviet Union was able to out produce them in the making of armored vehicles. Britain and the United States were able to produce huge numbers more aircraft. The conclusion has been that Hitler's gamble in invading the Soviet Union was the key behind the loss of the war.

What this book suggests is that Germany had lost the war before it invaded the Soviet union and its success up to 1941 had been a lucky break. The author even suggests that Britain alone had some chance of over time developing a preponderance of military force. It also puts paid to what must be now seen as the myth of Munich. Previously it was thought that Britain and France failed to re-arm in time to fight Hitler effectively. What this book shows is that by 1940 Britain and France had armies that were superior in both numbers and equipment. Their navies were vastly superior to Germany's and their air forces at least equal. When France fell, although Britain lost its field army its air force was equivalent to the German in numbers and quality and its Navy vastly superior to anything the Germans and Italians could put to sea. More over the British were able to out produce the Germans in aircraft even prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union.

The success of the German armies in 1940 was due to the allied command failing to respond to the German strategy. If the allies had been a bit more aggressive they could have fought it out to at least a draw and Germany did not have the resources to fight anything more than a short war. The idea of blitzkrieg was an invention of allied generals seeking to rationalize their defeat rather than a meaningful analysis of what happened. The French never even fully committed their air force to the struggle and most of it was captured on the ground.

The problem was that although Germany had access to the industrial plant of Northern Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands they were not able to use it to match either the Soviets or the British in war production. The reasons are complex but relate to the patterns of European trade and the success of the European blockade. If we take aircraft for example the French production which flowed to Germany was miniscule. France had access to manufacturing plant and supplies of bauxite but it was not able to produce. The reason was that it used to import coal from Britain for its electricity production. With the British blockade the main source of coal became Germany. However Germany was not able to increase its production sufficiently to overcome the short fall. In addition the amount of food produced in Europe fell. Previously the production of meat and dairy products in countries such as Denmark had been dependant on the import of grain and stock feed from South America. That was not available and the amount of food available for the dairy industry collapsed as did food production. In the rest of Europe food production had been based on the widespread use of chemical fertilizer. Apart from the issues of the blockade huge amounts of the chemicals used for fertilizer production was diverted to the making of explosives. In addition to the fact that French workers were moved on to subsistence rations and there was no power available the country had been dependant on motorized transportation. Again most of its oil imports came from abroad. With the outbreak of the war the only available oil products came from Romania or from synthetic oil made in Germany. This was barely enough for the needs of the armed forces (there was in reality not enough to keep the Italian Navy operational) and France reverted to a pre-petroleum transport economy.

It is this economic background that gave rise to Hitler's decision to invade the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had the natural resources that would enable European industry to out produce Britain and America. Rather than rashly starting a two front war Hitler knew that he could never develop the naval might necessary to conquer Britain simply by the occupation of Western Europe. The conquest of the Soviets was a key step in Hitler's strategy and not irrational. Of course none of the German general staff thought that the Soviets could stand up to an invasion of over 3 million men. However the Soviets were able to do so and then they were better able to marshal their resources so that they could outlast the Germans.

This is a very good book which will force everyone to re-think their attitudes to not only the second world war but the historical run up to it. It is unusual to have a book which is of such significance.

A very good book

Tom Munro's review has an excellent summary of the arguments in the book, so I shan't add to it.

I would encourage students of the Second World War to buy this book. This is a rare book that looks at the war entirely from the economics perspective, resisting the temptation to discuss military matters as many were wont to do. This results in a remarkably clear picture of the homefront picture.

This is important as it helps to address some of the myths of about the Second World War, especially with regards to the German economic performance vis-a-vis the other economies. These myths gave rise to puzzles that were usually not addressed.

For example, if it were true that the Germans lost because they had a smaller economy than the US, the British Empire and the Soviet Union, and the Germans knew this, then why did they launch a war in the first place, not against one, but all of the great economic powers? This was usually explained unsatisfactorily by the 'irrationality' of the Nazis.

As the author demonstrated, there was logic to the madness. The Nazis operated under a flawed assumption about how economics work, and believed that it was only by having a large economy that Germany could compete - and survive as a great power - against the other great powers, especially the United States. Thus, by this logic, Germany had to expand and conquer to build up its economic strength. The more likely war was to become with the US, the more Germany must throw everything into a 'do-or-die' gamble to grab enough economic resources to survive.

This is not a wholly novel argument, but I have never seen it argued so clearly and backed by so much economic and historical data.

The same could be said for the genocide of the Jews and other peoples by the Nazis. On the surface it seemed nothing but insane cruelty and barbarism. Yet again, Tooze demonstrated that there was logic in the madness, that once again, the Nazis, operating from their flawed picture of the world, chose a perfectly rational solution by their light. As food was one of the most critical items in shortage in the Nazi war economy, and enough must be provided for the German people, then the lesser people must be starved or killed outright. The less worthy would be killed off earlier, while the more able would be worked to death as slave labour. It was a perfectly economical solution in Nazi eyes.

Finally, I found Tooze's examination of "Speer's Miracle" to be absolutely enlightening. I was under the impression that Speer's efforts after the death of Todt helped to economise the German war effort and pushed it towards greater productivity, allowing Germany to survive longer. The author showed that this was not the case, that most of the measures attributed to the productivity increase was put in place before Speer's appointment. What happened was Speer repeated the traditional pattern of Nazi war production, where much resources were at first pump into one area, then another, according to perceived needs of the Nazi leadership. Thus, resources were first flooded into tank production, then withdrawn and poured into U-boat production, then finally, pulled again and put into aircraft production. This resulted in short bursts of great productivity in one arm or the other. But Germany never really became stronger overall, and Speer's Miracle was nothing more than a facade.

To add to this, Tooze launched a devastating indictment against Speer's claim that he did not know about the Nazi genocide and slave labour programmes, pointing out that much of the labour used in Speer's armament programmes came from concentration camps or slave labour camps.

In the end, the greatest strength of his book was the straightforward assembly of many facts and events into a single timeline showed clearly the mad logic that drove the Nazi relentlessly towards war, and then equally inevitably towards brutality and genocide.

Brilliant!

I studied this exact topic (Veimar Germany, the rise of Hitler and then WWII) in high school and have since read extensively on WWII. I would have said I knew most of what there was to know about the subject. Very soon into this book, I realised I was mistaken. "Wages of Destruction" is a real eye opener, and makes for a far more coherent story than you may have seen in TV documentaries or been taught in school.

One thing that bothered me in the usual telling of the WWII story is the motivation behind Germany's aggressive actions, which in the traditional telling of the story begins and ends with "because Hitler was insane". This is a great attempt to look at the 20th century from a German perspective and to explain the strategic logic behind many of Germany's actions during the period; the invasion of France, the treaty with the Soviets, Barbarossa, the concentration camps. All take on a different light when viewed through the lense of grand economic strategy.

The writing is absolutely top notch; fluid and imminently readable. And despite the often dry subject matter, I found I truly couldn't put this book down. There are some dull passages on fiscal policy, and on the personal politics of some of the Nazis, but these often lead on to a hard hitting conclusion.

The author seems a bit too keen to "shatter myths", which grates after a while. Sometimes it felt like you were intruding into a private argument between the author and some other history professor. Struggle on through these passages and you will find a thrilling story.

There are few books I would call essential reading on WWII. This book is one of them. "The Forgotten Soldier" is perhaps another.

Very Good if You Stay On Track

I needed to parse tables in a received Outlook email (HTML code), get information from an Excel spreadsheet based on what I found in the received Outlook email, and use what I found to create a new Outlook email to be sent to someone else. "Microsoft Outlook 2007 Programming" helped me with about 50-60% of what I needed to do. I had to use Visual Basic and the Visual Basic parts of "Microsoft Outlook 2007 Programming" helped steer me in the right direction.

Using Visual Basic with the Microsoft Suite of Programs appears to be a black art. Either you know it or you don't. "Microsoft Outlook 2007 Programming" outlines how to do a number of very specific things. If that is what you need to do, then you will be OK. Once you try to do something other than what is shown in the book, you will pretty much be on your own.

A must have addition for any MS Office resource library

I will admit, I did not think of utilizing VBA within MS Outlook. I have been using MS Excel for years and use VBA regularly. I have used VBA within MS Excel to send emails so I had a basic knowledge of using VBA for email.
With this book I was able to really open my mind and figured out what I have been missing. I have been using MS Outlook for over 10 yrs and I wish I would have found a resource like this years ago.
I got this book to help me in a project where I was asked to evaluate how our sales reps were using MS Outlook and if we could do anything to improve how we use the program. With this I was able to write some VBA to get creative and automate some features to help reduce the amount of time our sales reps use on email along with add utilization of the other functions within MS Outlook.
This is a must have addition for any MS Office resource library in your office or home.

Book Review on Kates

The French Revolution is often times viewed as the catalyst for the end of European feudalism. Unlike the British and American Revolutions, the French Revolution witnessed a large social upheaval that took decades of warfare and social changes to bring about. The study of the conflicts between the French nobility, elite classes (to include the bourgeois) and the sans-culottes provide a fascinating examination of the eventual collapse of feudalism in and the transition towards capitalism. This transitional stated is considered by professional historians as the march toward modernity and the end of feudalistic and imperialistic rule. The Enlightenment Age inspired by Locke, Jefferson, and Lafayette and other prominent philosophers and leaders demonstrated how natural rights conflicted with that of royalty and religious dictates. Throughout the book each author examined these conflicts.
Gary Kates organized within the eleven chapters of a wide scope of examples of European styled historiographic approaches concerning the French Revolution. Each chapter’s author advocated the style of historiographical approach through excellent scholarly research of primary documents that ranged from journals, pamphlets and newspapers. Secondary sources utilized by each authors were wide ranging monographs, biographies and archival researched studies that examined the French Revolution through differing approaches. The historians all demonstrated the new professional historical approaches described by Francis Courvares in the Interpretations of American History, Patterns & Perceptions and as Kates explained in his introduction. Each of the differing approaches examined the source material to provide the empirical evidence and facts to support their thesis.
There are many similarities to be found between some of the professional historical approaches discussed by Couvares (American History) and Kates (French Revolution history). Couvares discussed four approaches that have overlap with Kates. The Progressive historiography focused on class conflict, industrialization, and urbanization. Marxist historiography followed consensus historical writings arguing that economic interests and materialism explained history. Neoconservative historiography argued that culture and society is shaped note by the elites but by ordinary people (san-culottes). This is also considered to be an aspect of social history and the bottom up approach to historical study verses traditional history that focuses on key leaders and events (wars). The French Annales school of historiography spearheaded by Fernand Braudel suggested that over time population changes, trade, agricultural production and prices. As a social history Braudel attempted to provide a total history of events omitting politics. (Courvares, pp. 6-18)
Kates outlined how the authors utilized in the book illustrated Marxist, Revisionist, Intellectual, Liberal, and Social historiographies. Within the four sections he illustrated how the authors focused on the similarities and difference of these approaches. Marxist historiography until around the 1960s had maintained a strong influence concerning the interpretation of the French Revolution. Marxist authors argued that abuses between the rich and poor (bourgeois verse proletariat) had become so intolerable in France that it led to the uprising of the people to overthrow the power structure. The Ancien R�gime of aristocratic privilege became a mix of royal lineage and titles bought by capitalists so to live a privileged lifestyle. Soboul, Lucas, Furet, Baker, Jones, Maza, Tackett, and Markoff illustrated how this conflict between the aristocrats and the sans-culottes had different meanings based upon the different historiographical approaches.
Some authors argued that the bourgeois were on par with nobility regarding wealth and power whereas some argued that the middle-class capitalists led the revolution while others argued it was truly a sans-culottes’ revolution concerning land disputes, privilege and national honor of citizens as opposed to being subjects and serfs. Hunt, Desan and Dubois’s gender and race studies were the more modern historiographic approaches that examined the roles women, gender and race played and were impacted by the French Revolution. Hunt argued that women lost political power as men took away their political power. Desan suggested that women gained stronger social success as inheritance laws provided them stability. Dubois’s chapter illustrated how the French approach to anti-slavery nearly followed a Jeffersonian approach of thinking. Victor Hugues experience in Guadeloupe provided evidence that slavery had stolen the slaves ability to transition of the status of full French citizens and that the transition needed to be a gradual education and empowerment that ultimately failed with the rise of Napoleon.
In conclusion, this synopsis does not give the full credit Kate’s edition truly deserves. The book is an excellent read and cross sectioning of the historiographical approaches found in the chapters. The discussions of the counsels, the role of the people, the clergy, the aristocratic, nobility and the Terror provided a great vantage point to examine. All of the authors provided solid evidence to illustrate and support their thesis while demonstrating how the Marxist historical approach that was long popular had omitted many key aspects to explain the reasons behind the French Revolution. Even today, there are a multitude of lessons the revolution and study of the history provide the profession of historians to explore.

Extremely Well Done Inspiration

This is a book from the class of books which aim to improve the photographer rather than one dealing with the technology of photography. Perhaps the best known author along this line is Freeman Patterson who the authors here cite both as an expert in this area and an inspiration for them. These books, such as those I've cited and one other excellent one, 'The Practice of Contemplative Photography: Seeing the World With Fresh Eyes' teach you to see and once you see the striking image, recording it photographically is just a matter of steps.

Who is/are the photographer(s) you admire? Very likely these people did not need to travel to exotic locales like so many photographers desire so they can find 'the shot'. These masters saw the great images they later captured all around them. For example, Henri Cartier-Bresson just wandered the streets taking quiet images using his little Leica. Ansel Adams' images sell for seven figures yet he mostly shot places millions of others have and will travel to yet never equal his shots. Clyde Butcher makes wonderful images where others see nasty swamps. Weston's most famous photographs are of common vegetables.

So why do so many art and amateur photographers dream of finally taking that voyage to Antarctica or Africa or some other place to get stunning images when the masters seem to find them in their backyards? The difference is that they are masters because they see artistically. This book, as well as those others cited (and more too) have examples, essays and exercises to help you develop your eye to you too can see like those who can seem to always find 'the shot' where others just walk by.

This book isn't very long but is dense in information, sample snaps to illustrate the authors' points and exercises to assist you in this artistic development. The book concentrates on the image - the composition and its elements. It strives to break you free of any creative restrictions you may have developed. For example, the book instructs you, at one point, to (horrors of horrors) set your expensive DSLR rig on 'P' so you can concentrate on the image rather than fiddling with the aperture or shutter speed or whatnot. At other places, the authors even exceed this recommendation by suggesting you (double horrors of horrors) using your cell phone camera where you won't worry about these settings because you cannot.

Do not expect here a technical discussion of how aperture affects DOF or how to use CS to post process your way to imaging happiness or other purely technical issues. The authors figure you either know that stuff or can find it elsewhere. This is a book about how to move from where you are to a more artistically inclined version of yourself. By that, I mean one who can see the great photo no matter where you are.

To paraphrase the previously cited Freeman Patterson, what do you expect to photograph at that exotic location if you can't see what there is to photograph right at home? On a personal note, after reading this book for all of 15 minutes, I had a sort of awakening. I went home, got my expensive DSLR, and walked to a place I pass each morning. Putting the camera on the never before used P, I took a snap which is one of my better ever. It was nice to open my eyes and wake up to that which is always around me.

The Head and the Heart

Hundreds of books exist that explain how to take well exposed, well composed photos. What's so special about this one? The authors, Brenda Tharp and Jed Manwaring, say that while knowledge (the head) of basic photographic techniques is important, it is the heart that is fundamental to the creative process as it is a tool of infinite exploration, perception, and expression in the field of play that is photography today.

Brenda and Jed make a case for "seeing deeply and feeling deeply" in order to create images that may or may not be technically perfect, but that have personal meaning -- the ones that makes your heart go pitty-pat and cause you to exclaim a silent or very loud Yes! to yourself. And to carry out that expression effectively, the authors suggest that we begin with a "creative vision that comes from seeing with an open heart and mind."

They illustrate the "how" of this process through a series of intelligently presented chapters that each focus on an aspect of expanding one's awareness and perception. Entries such as "Practice Seeing Daily," and "See Beyond the Subject" offer simple but effective ways to see beyond the normal -- for example, to look for potential subjects in close-up and macro work, in reflections, and in patterns. Recommended exercises at the end of each chapter offer simple ways to practice what is discussed.

The chapters, "Discovering Pictures Where You Live" and "Capturing Everyday Moments" are at the heart of the book, which challenges the notion that one needs a fat travel budget to take great photos. On the contrary, the authors say, right around you -- in your own neighborhood, park, back yard, or even kitchen -- lie opportunities for "extraordinary everyday photography." Using examples of common objects (a cheese grater!, a coat hanger in an open window, a sheet of ice), the authors take us on a little bit of a magical mystery tour, showing how simple techniques such as isolating elements through cropping, identifying abstracts, and using light imaginatively can yield beautiful and unusual images.

Another chapter, "Expanding the Creative Process" shows examples of images manipulated either in camera (multiple exposures, slow shutter, panning) or in post-process (such as Photoshop) and provide fresh ideas for making "straight" photos more artful and personal. And the resources chapter lists several smartphone apps and websites that photographers will find useful.

Who will like this book? Any beginning-to-intermediate photographer who wants to expand their photographic skill and horizon, or any photographer who feels stuck, stymied, bored, or unchallenged. Anyone who thinks they can only make great photos in "great" locations. Practicing these techniques is likely to greatly improve your photography at home while preparing you to take even better photos when those big travel adventures do come your way.

Finally, I love the authors' suggestion to make photo play dates to practice the techniques offered. While they don't make a specific recommendation about whether to do this alone or with others, I personally think the exercises provide a useful framework for getting together with other explorers eager to expand photographic boundaries and to then share/compare results in a space of camaraderie, support and fun!

Learning to See

There are photography instruction books that suggest that a person can be a better photographer if they practice Zen in photography. Somehow my mind rebels at this approach, as if what I consider a form of religion (I know others will disagree) can be picked up and put down like a camera lens. That's why I was pleasantly surprised when Tharp and Manwaring suggested a Zen-like approach without ever mentioning Zen. I was also pleased when they suggested that their recommended approach could be used not only to make photographs of the inherently spectacular, like the Grand Canyon, but also to make better photographs of the everyday world around us.

The authors suggest a number of techniques for using the photographer's most important instrument - the mind. The opening chapters deal with learning to see the world and the later chapters with composing the key elements, especially light, to reveal what we see in that world. The book is lavishly illustrated with the authors' images. Each chapter includes several exercises designed to improve your vision, and, even though the text is well written and clear, if you don't work at these exercises, the book is not likely to benefit you. Typically, the chapter entitled "The Moment of Perception" includes an exercise that requires the reader to go out and photograph color, such as an image of one color, or contrasting colors. Doing these exercises is expected to sensitize the photographer to color in all of one's photography.

One of the side issues of this approach is that it seems aimed at sensitizing the photographer to form, without regard to content. Many of the authors' images in the early chapters resemble abstract paintings rather than photographs of something. The photographer should keep in mind while doing these exercises that many photographers believe that the purpose of photographic form is to explicate the content.

Learning how to see is far more difficult than learning how to set proper exposure. There is no guarantee that the authors can do this, but it seems to me that someone interested in improving the skill to see is likely to benefit from this book.

Though this was a text required for a class I have to say it's a great one.
Informative and interesting.
My favorite part is that the chapters aren't too long so I didn't feel bogged down with a ton of reading for class.
