Gary Kates is professor of history at Pomona College. He is the author of The Cercle Social, the Girondins, and the French Revolution and the editor of The French Revolution: Recent Debates and New Controversies. He has served on the editorial board of French Historical Studies. In 1995 the Knight-Ridder News Service named his Monsieur d Eon Is a Woman: A Tale of Sexual Masquerade and Political Intrigue as one of the top nonfiction books of that year.

Book Review on Kates

The French Revolution is often times viewed as the catalyst for the end of European feudalism. Unlike the British and American Revolutions, the French Revolution witnessed a large social upheaval that took decades of warfare and social changes to bring about. The study of the conflicts between the French nobility, elite classes (to include the bourgeois) and the sans-culottes provide a fascinating examination of the eventual collapse of feudalism in and the transition towards capitalism. This transitional stated is considered by professional historians as the march toward modernity and the end of feudalistic and imperialistic rule. The Enlightenment Age inspired by Locke, Jefferson, and Lafayette and other prominent philosophers and leaders demonstrated how natural rights conflicted with that of royalty and religious dictates. Throughout the book each author examined these conflicts.
Gary Kates organized within the eleven chapters of a wide scope of examples of European styled historiographic approaches concerning the French Revolution. Each chapter’s author advocated the style of historiographical approach through excellent scholarly research of primary documents that ranged from journals, pamphlets and newspapers. Secondary sources utilized by each authors were wide ranging monographs, biographies and archival researched studies that examined the French Revolution through differing approaches. The historians all demonstrated the new professional historical approaches described by Francis Courvares in the Interpretations of American History, Patterns & Perceptions and as Kates explained in his introduction. Each of the differing approaches examined the source material to provide the empirical evidence and facts to support their thesis.
There are many similarities to be found between some of the professional historical approaches discussed by Couvares (American History) and Kates (French Revolution history). Couvares discussed four approaches that have overlap with Kates. The Progressive historiography focused on class conflict, industrialization, and urbanization. Marxist historiography followed consensus historical writings arguing that economic interests and materialism explained history. Neoconservative historiography argued that culture and society is shaped note by the elites but by ordinary people (san-culottes). This is also considered to be an aspect of social history and the bottom up approach to historical study verses traditional history that focuses on key leaders and events (wars). The French Annales school of historiography spearheaded by Fernand Braudel suggested that over time population changes, trade, agricultural production and prices. As a social history Braudel attempted to provide a total history of events omitting politics. (Courvares, pp. 6-18)
Kates outlined how the authors utilized in the book illustrated Marxist, Revisionist, Intellectual, Liberal, and Social historiographies. Within the four sections he illustrated how the authors focused on the similarities and difference of these approaches. Marxist historiography until around the 1960s had maintained a strong influence concerning the interpretation of the French Revolution. Marxist authors argued that abuses between the rich and poor (bourgeois verse proletariat) had become so intolerable in France that it led to the uprising of the people to overthrow the power structure. The Ancien R�gime of aristocratic privilege became a mix of royal lineage and titles bought by capitalists so to live a privileged lifestyle. Soboul, Lucas, Furet, Baker, Jones, Maza, Tackett, and Markoff illustrated how this conflict between the aristocrats and the sans-culottes had different meanings based upon the different historiographical approaches.
Some authors argued that the bourgeois were on par with nobility regarding wealth and power whereas some argued that the middle-class capitalists led the revolution while others argued it was truly a sans-culottes’ revolution concerning land disputes, privilege and national honor of citizens as opposed to being subjects and serfs. Hunt, Desan and Dubois’s gender and race studies were the more modern historiographic approaches that examined the roles women, gender and race played and were impacted by the French Revolution. Hunt argued that women lost political power as men took away their political power. Desan suggested that women gained stronger social success as inheritance laws provided them stability. Dubois’s chapter illustrated how the French approach to anti-slavery nearly followed a Jeffersonian approach of thinking. Victor Hugues experience in Guadeloupe provided evidence that slavery had stolen the slaves ability to transition of the status of full French citizens and that the transition needed to be a gradual education and empowerment that ultimately failed with the rise of Napoleon.
In conclusion, this synopsis does not give the full credit Kate’s edition truly deserves. The book is an excellent read and cross sectioning of the historiographical approaches found in the chapters. The discussions of the counsels, the role of the people, the clergy, the aristocratic, nobility and the Terror provided a great vantage point to examine. All of the authors provided solid evidence to illustrate and support their thesis while demonstrating how the Marxist historical approach that was long popular had omitted many key aspects to explain the reasons behind the French Revolution. Even today, there are a multitude of lessons the revolution and study of the history provide the profession of historians to explore.
