Taniguchi employs a familiar plot device to begin an amiable story. One morning, 48-year-old business traveler Hiroshi Nakahara boards the wrong train—a recently built express to his old hometown. About the Author
Jiro Taniguchi was born 1947 in Tottori, Japan. He trained in the 60's and debuted in 1971 in 'Young Comic'. During the 70's he worked with author Natsuo Sekikawa before launching into their massive work 'The times of Botchan' in the 80's. The 90's saw many solo works including the prize winning 'A Distant Neighborhood'. The new millenium saw Taniguchi's epic adaptation of Baku Yumemakura's novel 'The Summit of the Gods' into a 1500 page manga. He continues to live and work in Japan.

Loved this bittersweet story

This is the first manga I have read and I learned about the author from a book I read called The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The 12 year old girl in that book said that she loved reading Tamaguchi manga. So I bought this one, and was completely entranced by it. I appreciated that it was formatted to read from front to back, which was certainly easier for a Western reader. The story of a man brought back to his childhood and having the opportunity to re-live it with his grown-up perspective and knowledge is very compelling and moving. I have already ordered volume 2 and have begun to read it. As a new reader of manga, I highly recommend this book.

The Way Home

Hiroshi Nakahara is a middle-aged business man on his way home from a business trip in Kyoto. Somehow, he winds up on the wrong train, one bound for his home town in Tottori. Although Hiroshi can't imagine how he made such a mistake, he decides to visit his mother's grave while he's there. But as he's about to leave, something strange happens. His body feels lighter and smaller, and even his surroundings seem to have changed somehow. Hiroshi finds that he's returned to his fifteen year old body, and that his home is exactly as it was when he was a boy. He has no idea how or why this happened, and all he can do is go home and try to adapt. He's living as his younger self again, but with all his adult knowledge in tact. Not only that, some events happen differently than they did the first time around. Will Hiroshi be able to change his past for the better?

This is not the kind of manga I usually read. I love wide-eyed characters and shojo romance. This, of course, has none of that, and none of the action found in shonen. But the story here really caught my attention. "A Distant Neighborhood" was written for adult men, but the story is universal. Who hasn't wanted to relive happy memories or redo mistakes? I'm still young at 21, but I often reminisce about my childhood. And Taniguchi handles the story so well. It's very emotional, especially the scene where Hiroshi first sees his family again. As he encounters old friends, he thinks about where each of them ends up in the future, an interesting touch. One of the best things about the story is that Hiroshi reacts and behaves exactly how you would expect for a person in his situation. He uses his adult knowledge to excel in school, and tries to convince a friend of his predicament in a moment of weakness. These are things I've always imagined myself doing in the same position. Although Hiroshi does revert some, he retains most of his adult maturity. It's really funny to hear him talking like a 43 year old in his 14 year old body.I also loved the way Hiroshi is aware of things he didn't see the first time around, like his parents' marriage problems.

The art here is great. Taniguchi's characters are more realistic than those in most manga, which fits the tone of the story. The scenery of modern and 1940s Japan are wonderful. Taniguchi pays great attention to detail, and the towns and clothing and hair styles are perfectly matched to the time-period. He uses interesting perspectives in his panels, which enhances the story. I particularly loved the way Hiroshi is shown set apart from his family the first time he sees them, like he's observing a memory.

The publishers did a great job on this manga. It's an over-sized softcover with inside flaps and sturdy paper. It's printed left-to-right (American style), which makes it accessible to non-manga readers, but great pains were taken to keep the artwork as it originally appeared (Taniguchi himself collaborated with the publisher to preserve the art). My only complain was several obvious typos, but these are easy to correct mentally.

"A Distant Neighborhood" is a wonderful manga that anyone should be able to relate to. The story is reflective but well paced. The characters make it realistic despite the fantastic events. And the art is also top-notch. The whole time I was reading this manga, I kept thinking what a great movie it would make- it's interesting, thoughtful, and touching to a wide audience. This is the kind of story that you don't forget, the kind that you come back to over and over. I have a feeling that it'll become more meaningful to me as I get older. It's a wonderful experience, so don't miss it.

Works for intended purpose but no more than that.

This book is fairly straightforward, but not very in-depth or detailed. It is more of an overview than I expected for a college level physiology book. Supplemental material is often needed for a more comprehensive understanding of concepts.

Book is good but hold off buying this version!!!!!!

Notice: The interactive e-book is not available. That's right, a complete rip off. The student complement page is a joke as well. not professional for this level of text. I'm sure Mr. Grant had not endorsed such deplorable strategy.

Save your money and buy used if your class requires this edition.

Textbook expired half way through the semester!

My book expired prior to the time identified when I purchased and I was unable to extend or purchase this textbook when I had two weeks left for the class. I had to re-purchase an 80 dollar book for 2 weeks to finish the remainder of my class. I will not be purchasing another textbook from Amazon or any books from Kindle. When I spoke to customer service they did not offer an solutions and they told me my only option is to re-purchase the text. Very disappointed!

Excellent Strategy Text

This is an excellent text. There are some errors, I suspect because it is the first printing of this edition. The author explains concepts that students confuse (like Key Success Factors) very well and puts Michael Porter's 5 Forces Model in context. Something few other textbooks bother to do so students tend to use it incorrectly. The cases and examples in the text are also useful.

Readers who are unfamiliar with Kalman�€™s work but respond to even a few items on that list should probably take a look at Principles. A reminder that life's a joy

This is such an unusual book: a pictorial monologue about a year in author/illustrator Maira Kalman's life, in which she tackles issues like life, death, family, history, travel, food and all the big philosophical questions of existence.
It has more than 300 pages, almost all of them with quirky Magritte-style illustrations that are often as humorous and charming as the text.
Maira Kalman's Jewish family fled Russia after the revolution and went to Palestine before settling in America. As I imagine many of those do whose families have endured lives fractured by the events of history, and so closely touched by atrocities like the Holocaust, Kalman seems never to take life for granted -- she often expresses her concern about the point of it all, and the mess so many people make of it.
But for all that, this book is imbued with Kalman's overriding and utter joy in being alive. Joy shines out of every page.
For example, while she's in Israel she writes of her despair about the embattled state of the Middle East, but once back home in New York she finds immediate reassurance and an antidote to her distress simply by observing the life on the streets -- the colours, the people, the eccentricities, the humanity of it all.
On other pages she'll share her delight in wonderful hats, bravely-dressed women, old people, the collections of weird objects she keeps at home, and many of the amazing sights she observes and records on her travels at home and abroad.
I'd love to meet her: from my reading I imagine a strong New York humour and an infectious fascination for the cities she loves.

Maira Is Forever

I can't believe that there have only been two reviews of this book! It is a Maira Kalman book for grownups - for anyone who loves her childrens books - the wit, the art, the words - finally there is a picture book for us!
And, for a short period of time, the original paintings are on view at Julie Saul Gallery on 22nd St. in NYC. What a bonus!

In Principles of Uncertainty, Kalman touches on nearly every human emotion - yielding a book that is tender, tough, ironic, big-picture, "God is in the details", mellow, poignant, funny - you name it. In her deceptively naive paintings, she captures the essence of things - relationships, beauty, life cycles.

I went to see the exhibition at Julie Saul two times - and I would have gone 200 times. This will be one of those books that we will return to over and over again.

Zen-like meditations on the magnificent and the mundane

Kalman's illustrations accentuate her pithy prose. Her pictures seem derived from some other time, perhaps the Impressionist era in France? They have a 19th century vibe. Think Van Gogh. Imagine Monet.

Her thoughts spring from the page as she passes through her days. Each thought evokes a picture. In her observation of a life that is mostly "normal" (if there is such a thing) Kalman connects readers with the deep reservoirs of personal feeling that we frequently fail to recognize.

This is a lovely, one-of-a-kind volume that will delight as it subtly conjures up the emotions that lie just below the surface in every one of us. Bravo!
