Cannot believe I paid $10 for this!

Writing down things that you hear and call it a book? Maybe I can do the same. I hear people talking. In the trees there are birds chirping. A car just drove passed my house. There is no substance to this book. Unfortunately his deconstruction leaves much to be desired and is elementary at best. Glad I didn't start with his more expensive books.

Great guide book

I took just a few acroyoga classes and I wanted to get a book that I could look at to learn more on my own and have fun doing with friends. I was pleasantly surprised out how thorough the book was, talks about other elements like thai massage and other yoga sequences you can do on your own. Nice and simple and easy to understand. I would recommend it.

Good guide, very helpful

This is an excellent book that covers a ton of great material, both solo and partner based! There's a great deal of information in here to keep you busy learning new sequences for quite awhile. My only complaint is that some steps are so briskly covered that I can't figure them out with the book alone, I must consult my teacher or hope to find a YouTube video that explains it. Also, while the pages are nice glossy full colored pages, the book is a simple binder with clear plastic cover. I wouldn't mind paying a little more to get a nice hardback copy if it was offered. There is room for improvement but overall I'm quite satisfied!

Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt (1875-1953) was one of the foremost German commanders of the Second World War. After service on both the Western and Eastern Fronts during 1914-1918 he rose steadily through the ranks before retiring in 1938. Recalled to plan the attack on Poland, he played a leading part in this and the invasion of France in 1940. Thereafter he commanded Army Group South in the assault on Russia before being sacked at the end of 1941. Recalled again, he was made Commander-in-Chief West and as such faced the 1944 Allied invasion of France, but was removed that July. He resumed his post in September 1944 and had overall responsibility for the December 1944 Ardennes counter-offensive. Captured by the Americans, he was handed over to the British, who wanted to try him for war crimes. Only his ill health prevented this from coming about.

For World War II fans...

I have now read two of Charles Messenger's biographies on some of the most famous (infamous) German military figures from World War II, Hitler's Gladiator...about SS General Sepp Dietrich, and this one, The Last Prussian, the biography of Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt. Although I must admit that gathering information on such figures must be extremely demanding, I felt that both of these books dealt more with the units and or the times being discussed rather than being in depth narratives about each of their lives. I'm not sure if additional interviews would have been better...or what exactly is missing, but I felt that significant portions of "The Last Prussian" just regurgitated what is already known and tries to tie von Rundstedt into those events.
Obviously, the fact that von Rundstedt did not leave any memoirs made this biography an extremely daunting task...and it is likely that many of the people closest to von Rundstedt at the time, are no longer among the living. Still, this book seemed like the "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" with a glimpse of von Rundstedt thrown in.
Despite all of this, I am sure that WW2 fans would still find the material interesting...particularly with respect to von Rundstedt's relationship with Hitler as described by the author.

Clearly written biography on a subject who was a major player in WWII but is very little known or understood. Messenger has done a good job of rounding out the personal history of this very talented man. He knew his profession from the ground up. He had the very rare talent of focusing on the main objectives and using a very highly talented staff to handle the operational and tactical details. Most don't realize that this man was selected to plan the defense against the West when he was almost 70, and was able to organize a very efficient defense in spite of very limited means and a very difficult political leader. For those looking for a revisionist history of Von Rundstedt as a willing tool of the Nazis this is not the book. He was a man willfully self isolated from politics and at the same time as all of us a part of his own environment.

About the Author
Rami Bar-Niv is one of Israel's most acclaimed and sought after pianists. He travels extensively and has become an international citizen, concertizing all over the world. Born in Tel-Aviv in December 1945, Bar-Niv graduated with honors from the Rubin Academy of Music, and was the recipient of various prizes and scholarships. He won the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Competition and was awarded a scholarship to further his studies in the United States. After graduating from the Mannes College of Music in New York, where he studied with the renowned Mme. Nadia Reisenberg, he won numerous competitions, and embarked on a successful concert career. He is heard regularly in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel, where he received the "Best Performer Award" from the Israeli government. Rami Bar-Niv performs as a soloist with orchestras, as a recitalist, and as a chamber musician. He appears in live concerts, on radio, and on television, and is always received with great enthusiasm. Often sent abroad by the Foreign Ministry to represent Israel in concerts, he has become an ambassador of goodwill for Israel. Bar-Niv made history by being the first, and so far the only, Israeli artist to perform in Egypt following the Begin/Sadat Peace Treaty. His recordings for CBS and other labels in Israel and abroad have met with praise and popularity. His compositions are published, recorded, and performed all over the world. He has often been at the top of the charts on various Internet music sites such as MP3.com, YouTube, and many others. Along with his concerts, he has been teaching all over the world, giving master classes, lectures, workshops, and private lessons. Since 2006 he has been offering a week-long piano camp for adults twice a year in the United States.

Paradigm Shifting Instruction

This book is a "must have" for anyone who employs a constructivist approach to teaching and learning. In The Art of Piano Fingering, Rami Bar-Niv frees us from traditional pianistic techniques and customs that can be injurious, and empowers us to rethink and reconstruct our approaches to passage playing. The examples Rami Bar-Niv applies his extraordinary instruction to are taken from classical music repertoire and are sufficient to offer insights at all levels of playing. Dozens of exercises and photos are included that model, develop, and reinforce the articulations necessary to accomplish "...efficient fingering that serves the music and the health of your hands..."

In a note to the author I wrote: "Your book arrived Wednesday and I began to read it that evening and yesterday morning. I love it! It is so clear. The attention to the editing is a testament to your care for your readers. In contrast, I just want to burn my Hanon! How I've hurt my hands stretching them indiscriminately.

When I stopped my fall piano instruction at the college due to facilities issues, I started thinking about the fingering of some of the simple root arpeggios I was working on. I knew that there had to be a better way with some of them for me. When I returned to my teacher in the spring, I asked her about these possibilities and she insisted that the standard fingerings were pretty much absolute. Bah humbug! So thank you for granting us all permission to alter fingerings to preserve the health of our hands and move about the keyboard with more ease and expediency! I am so thrilled."

I ask the author to consider writing an adult piano methodology which would incorporate everything his great mind has to offer piano students. Innovation in teaching methodology needs to come to this field so one doesn't spend a lifetime learning awkward technique that needs to be undone. Thank you.

Just what I have been looking for.

This was just the book to improve my piano playing. I am a self taught adult beginner who plays by ear and my difficulty had been how to finger passages on the fly. This book provided me with some useful principles which have improved my fingering in the short time that I have had it. It is very easy to understand if one knows the basic musical terms. Great book.

One of a Kind...

Packed with over 200 pages of fascinating history, guidelines, practical information as well as many helpful tips and tricks regarding fingering. When reading the helpful instruction on fingering and technique, Rami’s written style is as if he is right next to you in your home giving you a private lesson. He will show many examples of music with fingering ideas explaining and giving examples of what he prefers in addition to some other options (all of which may work fine). Ultimately, this leaves you to decide what would work best for you. In “The Art of Piano Fingering”, the keyword is “art”. Rami has done a terrific job encompassing technique, fingering, patterns, movement and phrasing into one book. I personally have learned a lot. While some of it was review, many were ideas I hadn’t learned or even thought of before. “The Art of Fingering” is a true gem and must have for all! Both teachers and students alike!

First of all, you'll learn what to expect from a budgie. There are certain things you've gotta be ready for... maybe certain things that will conflict with your lifestyle. I like how this book addressed that and shows you what to do about it. There are also important tips on how to choose the right bird, how to prepare your house and care for your budgie, how to interact with your budgie and best of all, how to tame and teach your budgie tricks! It's a very comprehensive book that covers everything you'll need to know about your new pet. Recommended.

In doing so, Sheldon Wolin presents sweeping new interpretations of Tocqueville's major works and of his place in intellectual history. As he traces the origins and impact of Tocqueville's ideas, Wolin also offers a profound commentary on the general trajectory of Western political life over the past two hundred years.

Wolin proceeds by examining Tocqueville's key writings in light of his experiences in the troubled world of French politics. He portrays Democracy in America, for example, as a theory of discovery that emerged from Tocqueville's contrasting experiences of America and of France's constitutional monarchy. He shows us how Tocqueville used Recollections to reexamine his political commitments in light of the revolutions of 1848 and the threat of socialism. He portrays The Old Regime and the French Revolution as a work of theoretical history designed to throw light on the Bonapartist despotism he saw around him. Throughout, Wolin highlights the tensions between Tocqueville's ideas and his activities as a politician, arguing that--despite his limited political success--Tocqueville was ''perhaps the last influential theorist who can be said to have truly cared about political life.''

In the course of the book, Wolin also shows that Tocqueville struggled with many of the forces that constrain politics today, including the relentless advance of capitalism, of science and technology, and of state bureaucracy. He concludes that Tocqueville's insights and anxieties about the impotence of politics in a ''postaristocratic'' era speak directly to the challenges of our own ''postdemocratic'' age. In this massive masterwork, he examines the "theoretical journey" of Alexis de Tocqueville, author of the indispensable Democracy in America (1835-39).
