About the Author
William J. Doherty, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Minnesota Couples on the Brink Project at the University of Minnesota, and a practicing marriage and family therapist. Past president of the National Council on Family Relations, he received the Council's Margaret E. Arcus Award for Outstanding Contribution to Family Life Education. Dr. Doherty is the author of numerous books for professionals and general readers. Married since 1971, he has two grown children and four grandchildren.

Helpful - and insightful

You can't control anyone but yourself - and this book's insights are good. It helped me with my confusion and powerlessness - helping me find my own answers, and to help me try to wrap my brain around my situation. Unfortunately I was just obsessed with my divorce - and just fed myself with book after book after book after video after conference and many nights of prayer and phone calls. The obsession with trying to save something - and hearing the right words, but not getting any action from my partner, just tormenting me into thinking I could save it - and that I could maybe change the situation - that I could have made it work - but it TAKES TWO. So - read with hope... realistically.

Great book! Recommended!

We had to go through this book for our college study. We got married a couple of years ago and really loved this book. It's written in a way that it's easy to read. And it helps you fight for your marriage in the right manner. I especially liked that it said that a marriage counselor should not be neutral to whether or not to get a divorce, but instead try to help the marriage succeed when possible.

A very positive book.

This book is based on the idea that our society often does not support marriage sufficiently, with harm to the couple, the children, and the society. Dr. Doherty presents his views in a very straightforward way, without "psych talk". I would recommend this book to successful couples, to couples considering or early in marriage (or relationship), and to couples in some distress.
