Most SQL texts attempt to serve as an encyclopedic reference on SQL syntax - an approach that is counterproductive, since this information is readily available in online references published by the major database vendors. For SQL beginners, it's more important for a book to focus on general concepts and offer clear explanations and examples of what the various statements can accomplish. This is that beginner book. A number of features make The LANGUAGE OF SQL unique among introductory SQL books. First, you will not be required to download software or sit with a computer as you read the text. The intent of this book is to provide examples of SQL usage that can be understood simply by reading them. Second, topics are organized in an intuitive and logical sequence. SQL keywords are introduced one at a time, allowing you to build on your prior understanding as you encounter new words and concepts. Finally, this book covers the syntax of three widely used databases: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle, with special "Database Differences" boxes that will show you any differences in the syntax among those three databases, as well as instructions on how to obtain and install free versions of the databases. This is the only book you'll need to gain a working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.

Super intro book focusing on using SQL to access and organize data
By davekfrommd
Just a super, super intro to the language of SQL. Excellent examples and clear explanations. No theoretical techno babble set theory, just information distilled to the essentials for ACCESSING and organizing data stored in relational DB. It's not about designing DBs or security access controls, etc. If you have a need to access data stored in a relational DB and are a bit rusty or don't know SQL this excellent book is for you. No you won't be an expert or even be to create complex queries, but you'll have a great start on taking the next steps of either downloading free DB s/w to develop your skill or gaining read/report access to your company's data.

The good and the bad thing about it
By charlemagne
Required book for school will take through the process of creating DBs and using SQL. The good and the bad thing about it, is the very simple way it takes you step by step through how to do everything is SQL. No software or problems at the end of the chapters so you could practice what is so well explained in the book. It feels like having a cook book without access to a kitchen or food. If you want to generally understand the terms and possibilities get if you want to learn to use SQL you will need something else.

Good for beginners
By Kristaulf
SQL in itself is a fairly easy language for anyone to learn. It has easy syntax and there is very little learning curve if you're a new to programming anything. This book does a good job at provide examples, and walking you through how those examples relate to data tables. It would be nice if it would show some "before" and "after" snapshots of records so you could see maybe a little more of what you're stimulating. However it does walk you through the syntax as you learn it and what each piece is operating on.
