The Design of Low Noise Oscillators, by Ali Hajimiri, Thomas H Lee

It is hardly a revelation to note that wireless and mobile communications have grown tremendously during the last few years. This growth has placed stringent requi- ments on channel spacing and, by implication, on the phase noise of oscillators. C- pounding the challenge has been a recent drive toward implementations of transceivers in CMOS, whose inferior 1/f noise performance has usually been thought to disqualify it from use in all but the lowest-performance oscillators. Low noise oscillators are also highly desired in the digital world, of course. The c- tinued drive toward higher clock frequencies translates into a demand for ev- decreasing jitter. Clearly, there is a need for a deep understanding of the fundamental mechanisms g- erning the process by which device, substrate, and supply noise turn into jitter and phase noise. Existing models generally offer only qualitative insights, however, and it has not always been clear why they are not quantitatively correct.

From the Back Cover
The tremendous growth in wireless and mobile communications has placed stringent requirements on channel spacing and, by implication, on the phase noise of oscillators. Compounding the challenge has been a recent drive toward implementations of transceivers in CMOS, whose inferior l/f noise performance has usually been thought to disqualify it from use in all but the lowest-performance oscillators.

Low noise oscillators are also highly desired in the digital world. The continued drive toward higher clock frequencies translates into a demand for ever-decreasing jitter.

There is a need for a deep understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing the process by which device, substrate, and supply noise turn into jitter and phase noise. Existing models generally offer only qualitative insights, however, and it has not always been clear why they are not quantitatively correct.

The Design of Low Noise Oscillators offers a new time-variant phase noise model. By discarding the implicit assumption of time- invariance underlying many other approaches, this model is capable of making quantitative predictions of the phase noise and jitter of different types of oscillators. It is able to attribute a definite amount of phase noise to every noise source in the circuit. Because of its time-variant nature, the model also takes into account the effect of cyclostationary noise sources in a natural way. It details the precise mechanism by which low frequency noise, such as l/f noise, upconverts into close-in phase noise. An important new understanding is that rise and fall time symmetry controls such upconversion. More important, it suggests practical methods for suppressing this upconversion, so that good oscillators can be built in technologies with notoriously poor l/f noise performance (such as CMOS or GaAs MESFET).

The Design of Low Noise Oscillators will be of interest to both analog and digital circuit as well as RF circuit designers.

So glad this book finally came out
By A Customer
I am so glad I finally found this book. For an RF IC designer it is a blessing to find a book that answers all his questions about oscillator design and noise issues. It is sometimes so hard to fingure out how to choose the optimum topology and design parameters. A lot of the work done on oscillator noise is either too theoretical that no insight can be obtained, or too empirical and case specific. This books helps a great deal. It has the right balance between the theory and experiments. The approach is completely new, intuitive and at the same time accurate. This is an excellent book if you are interested in oscillator design.

The most complete analysis of noise in oscillators
By A Customer
This is the newest and most complete analysis of VCO noise to this date. Hajimiri and Lee's new approach to noise modeling has rendered previous work obsolete. It clarifies a large number of highly debated issues about VCO noise and provides tangible design guidelines that can be used to optimize the noise performance of integrated VCOs. I enjoyed it a lot and highly recommend it to anyone tired of ad hoc analysis and empirical design of VCOs.

A phase noise oriented approach to oscillator design
By John MacKenzie
This book approaches the oscillator design and optimization problem by placing a lot of emphasis on phase noise. It gives a complete overview of authors approach to modeling of phase noise. It uses this approach to optimize the performance of integrated resonator based and ring oscillators. It emphasizes silicon integrated circuit design which is usually limited by the low quality factor of inductors. One deficiency is lack of any information on design for minimum spurious response and harmonics.
