Set at a comic convention, this story shouldn't be as entertaining and fun as it is. But it's a little gem: the plot trips along, and though the art is good, not breathtaking, the Russian-born Canadian artist/author has clearly mastered the now international visual language of manga. The heroine is Chris, a self-willed girl who is taken for granted by her boyfriend, Derek. Chris meets the dark and mysterious Matt, who seems to understand her completely, and hijinks ensue. Sounds corny as hell, but the narrative is smart, witty and moving. The characters tap into the manga archetypes, which makes them breathe and have moments of being larger-than-life. Chris goes through self-doubt to self-knowledge and learns a bit of bravery along the way. It's astonishing to reflect that all the action takes place in the hotel rooms and convention floors where kids sell their homemade comics. Under the noses of adults, these "cons" have slipped into popular culture as a new land of rebels, mentors and wisdom—what road trips and the Haight once were. They're a perfect place for a growing-up story. Using every visual manga convention to its fullest, this ripping little tale is strong and expressive enough to reveal real emotional depth. (Nov.)

A Fun Romp at ComiCon

I went out on a limb with this manga. I wasn't familiar with Svetlana Chmakova's work and didn't know if the story would be overly cheesy. But it was discounted so I figured why not.

Chmakova's artistic range is impressive. Each of the characters went from adorably expressive to serious without losing the qualities that made them unique. There was no emotional confusion in any of the panels and each of the panels were easy to follow.

The story takes place over three days at a comic convention. Christie is in a relationship with a boy named Derek when Matt comes along with a large (proverbial) mirror, and Christie is forced to take a long hard look at how troubled her relationship truly is.

The writing was well-done and well-edited, in turns hilarious and poignant. Something else that I loved is that the story isn't toned-down or overly sugarcoated. There's one scene in particular that shocked me because it was truly dramatic and heartrending, but I was glad it was included because it drove home the seriousness of Christie's situation with Derek. But not to worry that the book is overly dramatic or tragic because it's balanced with plenty of lighthearted moments, too.

Now that I'm done, I would have gladly paid full price--in fact, I went and purchased the next two issues immediately. This manga was a gem.

construct and communicating with visual images. Illustrated
throughout in black & white with a colour insert. The
paperback version in particular is great value for money.

more than most of the graphic designers I know.

This dense but highly informative volume narrates the long pretechnological history of the use of poisons and fire in warfare. Mayor, who has published in Military History Quarterly, begins with the first legend of poisoned arrows: Hercules and his quiver of missiles tipped with the hydra's venom (probably snake venom). He and his wife also figure in an early use of an externally applied poison-the "poisoned" garments that killed them both with an inextinguishable flame may have been impregnated with saltpeter. Using their powers of observation and a sound if rule-of-thumb grasp of cause and effect, our not-so-primitive ancestors went on to set fires, throw fires and project fires (Greek fire reached its apex when flung from a ship-mounted flame thrower). They also put poison on arrowheads, in food and wine and in water supplies, tamed elephants to use as living tanks, bottled scorpions to throw over walls and knew about the problems of accidental casualties, enemy retaliation and lowering the ethical level of warfare. Mayor clearly describes how some of the poisons caused gruesome deaths, and Greek fire was essentially napalm. One antielephant weapon consisted of coating live pigs with pitch, setting them on fire and driving them at the elephants. The sheer mass of information will be daunting for the novice, particularly to one not familiar with classical mythology, but the book is otherwise absolutely absorbing, if macabre, and a formidable source on classical warfare, with bibliography, illustrations and annotations to serve further research.

We recoil from biological and chemical weapons as uniquely nefarious creations of modern science, but Mayor, combing classical writings both mythical and historical, has found that they existed throughout antiquity. Far from merely reciting the armory of poisons and plagues she found, Mayor shows how the ancients' reactions to biological weapons prefigure contemporary attitudes about them. Between the poles of the ethical and the expedient, the concept of the honorable in warfare swung back and forth: a toe-to-toe Homeric swordfight, yes; a poisoned arrow from afar, no. Mayor integrates these oscillations into a narrative embracing the contents of Pandora's box and their adaptation into articles of war. Ancient commentators expressed both repugnance and admiration for ingenuity, attitudes Mayor detects in Hercules' slaying of the Hydra, in Odysseus' adventures, and in other myths. Expanding her ambit to Indian writings, and to the use of animals such as bees, scorpions, and elephants on the battlefield, Mayor spices her astute commentary with diverse opinions about biological weapons. A good book in discussing many aspects of warfare often glossed over or assumed with Hollywood hyperbole. At times I wish it was more specific and less philosophical, but that was enjoyable in its own way as well. If you seek a comprehensive understanding of historical warfare this book is a must.

About the Author
Bob Burns joined The Mountaineers Club in 1971. In 1972 he graduated from the Basic Climbing Course in the Everett branch. In 1975 he moved to Seattle, and graduated from The Mountaineers Snowshoe Course in 1974 and the Intermediate Climbing Course in 1976. He served on the Club’s Climbing Committee from 1975 to 1985, and on its Board of Trustees from 1986 through 1991. Thorough Research and Explanation of a Complex Subject

I owe a huge debt to Dr. Otis for his research regarding this subject. The author launched his research to determine why spiritual darkness exists where it does. It is clear that territorial spirits are both real and Biblical. But, as believers we need to go a step further and understand why are they there and how can we seek God's guidance in overcoming their harmful effects.
Twilight Labyrinth is not a quick read. The early chapters provide an introduction and make the research relevant. The next third of the chapters discuss historical concepts, spiritual beliefs and psychological realities, pointing toward their cause and effect relationships. Finally, the book offers a summary of why darkness exists where it does based on Brother George's research.
This work requires effort and maturity on the part of the reader, however it offers a conclusion that should be understood by all church leaders. If you are ready for an indepth study into spiritual warfare, This book is for you.

A Deeper Look Into Spiritual Warfare

I have read many books about spiritual warfare and this is the first that I have read that makes me have to take a break and gather my thoughts. It seriously makes you think and opens your eyes to many of the things of the spirit. I'm only on page 114 and I am blown away. Most spiritual warfare books only tell you what spirit does this and how it does that, but this book takes you to the core. Where did this spirit come from and HOW did it get that way? Where is the open door? It is excellent. This book also shows how the enemy works through animals. Wonderful!

Amazing book

George Otis's book is the most fascinating book I have ever read regarding spiritual warfare. It should be required reading for anybody involved in ministry work, including church elders. For me, it answered many questions about why things have happened in my own personal life as well as was a fascinating explanation to some of the studies I have done on Far Eastern religions. George Otis provides extensive footnotes at the end of the book which contain further explanation and anecdotes regarding his subject matter. I kept two bookmarks in this book as I was reading...one in the main area of the book and one at the footnotes so I could easily check out the further explanations and stories as I read along.

Good for girls who are bi-curious or bisexual! Very arousing

I had been searching for a book on women-only erotica - and I surprisingly ended up with "Penthouse XX Girl on Girl," which I found to be quite good.

As background, I had just finished reading "The Straight Girl's Guide to Sleeping with Chicks" by Jen Sincero, which I also enjoyed. Besides helping us straight women to feel better about being sexually attracted to members of our own sex, the author goes one better - by helping us to turn fantasy into reality.

As the author suggests, an essential step in the process is learning to masturbate while imagining ourselves making love to other women - and using erotic literature as a tool, hence my search. (I already knew how to masturbate. I was just looking for some literature to go with it!) Unfortunately, most of the lesbian erotica I encountered was written for - and about true lesbians - with the "happy endings" involving women who were either discovering their true selves, or starting (or reaffirming) a life-long commitment with another babe, and then riding off into the sunset together.

By comparison, "Penthouse XX Girl on Girl" features erotic stories mainly about straight women - who then discover some level of girl/girl attraction within themselves. As a straight woman - who happens to be bisexual - I found this book much more to my liking. The women in Penthouse XX enjoyed each other immensely during their encounters - and presumably went back to their normal (heterosexual) lives afterwards, which to me was more realistic. (I've come to realize that sleeping with girls is something I'd like to do - as another facet of me. And I've no desire to leave my man - for another woman.)

In a classic tale, a woman executive finds herself swept away by a sexy masseuse. In another, two close friends lose their inhibitions while house sitting. And, in a third, a secretly bisexual college senior finally makes love to her roommate - when she consoles her friend after the girl unceremoniously breaks up with her boyfriend. (The book goes on deliciously with about twenty more of these.)

In all, the stories were richly detailed with plenty of kissing, caressing, and undressing, as well as girls discovering the touch, the sensuous taste, and the enrapturing fragrance of being with another woman. It was almost as though each author was trying to overcome the negative precepts many of us may have towards being with another woman. Fortunately, this made each of the amorous tales long enough - to allow me to bring myself to a soothingly satisfying conclusion. (Hey, mission accomplished!)

I'm sure there are those who would say that these letters to the editors of Penthouse are just fabrications (made up). But I found myself enthralled with them nonetheless.

For straight women (and men) who might enjoy reading about romantic sexual encounters involving girls - who aren't necessarily lesbians - this is a book I would highly recommend.
