About the Author
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was born on the Greek island of Lefkas, the son of an Anglo-Irish surgeon in the British army and a Greek mother. After his parent's divorce when he was six, he was brought up in Dublin by a great aunt. At the age of nineteen, he went to America, eventually ending up in New Orleans as a newspaper reporter. His flight from Western materialism brought him to Japan in 1890, where he worked for an English newspaper, the Kobe Chronicle, and taught in various schools. In 1896, he began teaching English literature at Tokyo Imperial University, a position he held until 1903, and at Waseda University. Hearn married a samurai's daughter, Koizumi Setsu, became a Japanese citizen and a Buddhist, and changed his name to Koizumi Yakumo. At the young age of 54, he died of a heart attack. Hearn's search for beauty and tranquility, for pleasing customs and lasting values made him a confirmed Japanophile. His keen intellect, poetic imagination, and wonderful clear style permitted him to penetrate to the very essence of things Japanese. He became the great interpreter of things Japanese to the West. Hearn's most famous work is a collection of lectures entitled Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation (published posthumously in 1905). His other books on Japan include Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan (1894), Out of the East (1895), Gleanings in Buddha Fields (1897), Exotics and Retrospectives (1898), In Ghostly Japan (1899), Shadowings (1900), A Japanese Miscellany (1901), and Kwaidan (1904).

This is simply one of those perfect dream of a coloring book for the devoted colorist

I purchased this book so I could specifically use my new Holbein coloring pencils. As I first thumbed through this book I was in awe at how beautifully inspiring each page is.

On the left side of each open page there are gorgeous full color museum quality prints and paintings taken from timeless Japanese Garden scenes. On the opposite side of the page is the same scene for us to color. What could be better than that? I am looking forward to taking ample opportunity to shade and color according to the prints, and of course, I'll take the daring step into pure creativity by applying my own color choices.

~ excellent quality printing and binding - this could be displayed on a coffee table as is
~ 23 pages to color
~ absolutely the perfect thicker and slightly rough and off white paper for coloring pencils, and alcohol markers (naturally some bleed through with any alcohol markers)
~ pages to color are perforated for tear out for display or coloring ease
~ reverse side has 1800's Japanese poet haikus, verses or texts, each honoring the colored prints

All the lovely Japanese garden designs are filled with birds, koi, wisteria, birds in cherry trees, serene Japanese women, and much more. This is a treasure of a book.

This coloring book absolutely took my breath away with its quality, beauty, and quantity. It is worth every penny, I'm almost afraid to color in it for fear of marring it! It is such a keepsake!

A Thunder of Crude

From the very start and through the first several pages the author captivates you with the pending doom of a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) based upon several circumstances including poor maintenance and unprofessional crew decisions. The author makes heavy use of "Flash Backs" concerning persons that have little or no association with the pending demise of the ship. I read this selection in one setting hoping that it would evolve into a story more related to the ship and the issues related to it. After building up to the catastrophic destruction of the tanker, the actual event is just a fizzle as if it were a minor point in the story. The book spend more time on persons totally uninteresting and unrelated to the ship. The technical information as presented in this book could have been written in less than thirty pages. Tanker and supertanker stories and novels are element material for publishing and we need more..... but this one was not it. Three Stars?

Excellent edition

There are lots of editions of Leviathan around, so why buy this one? The things the editor, Ed Curley, has done to make this edition accessible yet scholarly, like:

1. Updated spelling and punctuation. Although I personally miss Hobbes' original spelling (see the Penguin edition for that), as a teacher I appreciate Ed's making it easier for beginners and ESL students to read Hobbes' words.

2. Index. Most editions do not have one.

3. Glossary. Hobbes used many terms that are now archaic, and Ed's brief but clear glossary helps clarify the text.

4. Ed's Introduction. Curley is one of the most careful and knowledgeable commentators on Hobbes, and he briefly but expertly introduces some of the major themes of the book.

5. Latin variants. Hobbes wrote Leviathan in English and in Latin, and there are some interesting differences between the two versions. Ed presents many of these in the footnotes, plus he includes English translations of the Appendices of the Latin version.

Not perfect, but still very valuable

This is the very first book that I read about the MEAN stack. I have now read 2 other extensive books on the subject and I will share my impressions about this book, Practical Node.js, by Azat Mardan :à

First of all, Node.js and the other JavaScript-based technologies that have emerged in the last few years have evolved and changed quite rapidly so you have to judge this book for its relevance at a specific moment in time, i.e. when it was written. In that context, I think that this is a good book, for a couple of reasons :

- The author (Azat Mardan) knows the MEAN stack very well. He seems to have some real-world experience with these technologies.

- Azat's experience with the MEAN stack has given him some insight about them. I have tried several of the relative technologies to the MEAN stack like different template engines (Jade, Handlebars, EJS, ...), different Express middleware, different database solutions/session stores (mongoDB, Redis, ...). I can say that Azat's recommendations about which of these technologies you should consider in various developement scenarios are spot on. To me, what he recommends and his choice of complementary technologies for your Node.js/MEAN projects are excellent recommendations. In my own experience, I ended up trying different options and ended up choosing pretty much the same technologies recommended in this book. Like I said, I have read other books on Node.js/MEAN and this is not always the case.

- The book directs you towards different resources for further reading/exploring of subjects covered in the book or not covered but worth knowing about.

Now, what makes this book imperfect is mainly that it seems to have lacked careful editorial reviewing before being put on the market. There are some holes here and there when you read the book. This has been mentioned by other reviewers. This is a little frustrating but in my case it happened maybe 2 or 3 times during my reading. I was reading and then suddenly : "Hey, how did we get to this code from the last code example ?". It seems like the author has jumped or omitted some transitional paragraphs here and there. But we have to keep in mind that this is a book about some fast-changing open-source technologies and the author has to get it out quickly, otherwise it becomes outdated by the time it gets published. And as far as I know, when this book came out on the market, there was pretty much nothing else that covered as much of these topics. So it was still highly valuable, even with its imperfections.

I have not mentioned the topics of mongoDB and angularJS in my review because I have learned these from other sources. I have read these chapters quickly but I can say that if you're serious about using these technologies in your stack, you will need to complement the info provided in this book with some more in-depth books/online tutorials/... Again, Azat Mardan shares some good insights about how to use these in your projects, whether you should use mongoskin or mongoose with mongoDB, etc. But these topics simply have too much scope to be covered extensively in this book.

Overall, I think that this book is still valuable today. It has certainly help me. We keep an eye on the io.js project that seems promising but it's not ready for production yet. So at this point in time, Node.js and the MEAN stack is a great option for some projects and this book will get you started fast. My recommendation is that you buy this book and one or two other books on the MEAN stack at the same time. With books like this one and others on open-source tech, spreading your reading between different books helps you gain a better perspective on the topics.

Great, but be prepared for a few potholes

There are two versions of this book to consider. The book itself and what the book aspires to be. I love the latter, it's so full of energy and ideas about the use of express & node. It walks you through several example apps to illustrate various features & libraries, and throws a lot of resources at you to build your knowledge even further.

The other book, the one you will read, is full of typos and incomplete thoughts, so that following along can be a significant challenge. In a way you could view this as a positive, because it forces you to dig deeper into the online documentation to repair the text as you read, fortifying your knowledge even more. Then because of the many precedents for mistakes, there are an equal number of spots that I mistook for mistakes, but were in fact accurate. All these 'parsing errors' result in some lost efficiency.

Overall, it seems to me that these technologies are moving so fast that a snapshot such as this, while blurry, may be a trade off between clarity and relevance. While I wish it was a little more carefully proofread, I'd still say it offers a considerable amount of insight into the tools in its scope.

A trip to a better world...amazing!

Reading this book is like traveling to some beautiful alternative universe where people are kind, love is everywhere, and life is good. It's more than just a "funny" book. It's a complete experience of another, nicer and more intelligent way to view the world.

I felt different after I read this book. Smarter. Nicer. Stronger. Happier. The world looked a little bit different. And I felt better about everything. (And I was happy already).

But the book is not only uplifting and empowering. It is hilariously funny! Much funnier than her previous two books. They were light time passers. Good for a chuckle. But Ellen has matured since then. And this book is at a higher level in all departments. I found myself laughing constantly at how clever something was. And I rarely find a book laugh out loud funny. But this one certainly is.

Full of Ellens winning life philosophy...told in the form of funny stories. Some true, some not. There is love. Freedom of thought. Creativity. Inspiration. This book felt like more than a book.

It feels like an experience. An experience not to be missed. Recommended.

Leave it to Ellen to make the Audiobook Different than the print edition.....

This is the third book for comedian/talk show host Ellen Degeneres and, if ever there was a book that should be "read by the author", it's one by Ellen. She honed her craft of comedy by doing "stand-up" and she actually "performs" the audio version, more than just reading it. Ellen talks fast and so the 3 hours on the three CDs literally fly by! And the words aren't all the same as the print edition (which I also read through). She re-wrote parts of it to "talk to - you - the listener" and even adds a chapter (Chapter 29) just for the audiobook. Speaking of chapters, the print edition does not have numbered chapters for these short essays. But Ellen announces a number before each one. Since I started with the audio version first, I wondered - when I got to the chapter titled "Meditation", which contains 20 seconds or so of silence - how she'd deal with this in the print edition. So I looked and there were three blank pages. The reverse holds true for the chapter titled "For the Children" where there are full-page illustrations to color. For the audiobook, Ellen tells the listener that there is a .pdf file on the CD with the illustrations - though I haven't checked that out yet.

The print edition is 240 pages with short chapters and plenty of space between the lines so you can easily pick it up and put it down as time permits. These are short essays of observations on everything from being judge on American Idol to being married to her wife Portia. Either format will entertain you - it did me - if you are an Ellen fan (I am). The Print version allows you to go back and read - or share - a special chapter., while the audio version allows you to hear her voice and timing.

Laugh out Loud funny

I don't normally write reviews but I had to review this book because I love Ellen and love this book and want it to be successful for her! Funniest most witty book I have read in a long time. You really have to know and appreciate Ellen's humor to read and understand this book. It very much reminds me of her stand up comedy dvd "here and now". It is a lot of the same humor and I can literally hear her voice and how she says things while I am reading this book. This book is not only hysterical but it also has really wonderful words of wisdom in it. She brings you back to a much simpler time and makes you realize how ridiculous life has gotten with laziness, busy-ness, and technology to name a few. I read this book in a day and it was amazing from the first word to the last.

About the Author
Anne McCaffrey, one of the world’s most popular authors, is best known for her Dragonriders of Pern� series. She was the first woman to win the two top prizes for science fiction writing, the Hugo and Nebula awards. She was also given the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement in Young Adult Fiction, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was named a Science Fiction Writers of America Nebula Grand Master. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1926, McCaffrey relocated to Ireland in the 1970s, where she lived in a house of her own design, named Dragonhold-Underhill. She died in 2011.

Dragonriders of Pern (Kindle Edition)

First, I'd like to say that I love these books. I re-read them ever couple years and it's a fresh story with new meaning each time. For me it's a timeless series.

I offer many thanks to Anne MaCaffery and her son Todd McCaffery who has picked up the reins of story telling with the Realms of Pern.

As for the Kindle Edition of this book, I am sorely disappointed in the typographical errors. In a time when we have simple spell checking on just about every application we use, it's depressing to see this digital media plagued with such inconsideration for the reader.

The spelling of the character names are misspelled, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph. There are major typographical mistakes in connection words that require the reader to read, and then re-read the entire sentence to discern the actual word intended as different words could change then entire feel and meaning of the sentence.

Paying roughly the same for this Kindle Edition as I would for a new mass-market paperback, I question why anyone would pay full price when a print copy can be acquired, used, at a faction of the cost.

The Kindle Edition is a sad disservice to the readers and fans of Anne McCaffery.

Del Rey and Random House Digital should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a poor quality product!!

EXCELLENT STORY, HORRIBLE EDITION

In The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey creates a stunning and richly detailed world. It's clear on reading these stories that they are very dear to McCaffrey's heart. Her blend of science, music and human drama are supported by a wholly believable mythology which bridges the gap between our earth and Pern.
Unfortunately, this edition was hastily thrown together without any regard for the author's hard work. On seemingly every page there are typographical errors so severe that McCaffrey's spell is broken. Character names constantly shift spelling. Words are misspelled, mixed up and changed to the point that the prose completely falls apart. At times geographic locations on Pern are switched with character names...this is a work of Science Fiction/Fantasy but when the place where you live starts talking all believability goes out the window. The sloppy editing of the edition was so bad I ended up buying individual copies of Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. I noticed none of the errors I saw in the three-in-one volume.
I highly recommend reading Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon, but save yourself the confusion and disappointment of this three-in-one edition. Buy each separately.

This is the first book I bought on my kindle and I was sorely disappointed in this version of the books. There were many errors in all three books and it left so many plots unexplained. I ended up buying the full versions of the original books and wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.
