About the Author

VIOLA SHAFIK studied cinema in Hamburg and is a freelance film scholar and filmmaker. She has directed several documentaries, including The Lemon Tree (1993), which was awarded the prize for best documentary short at the Images of the Arab World Festival in 1993. She is also the author of Arab Cinema: History and Cultural Identity (AUC Press, 1998; revised edition, 2007).

The Cinema That Could Have Been

Viola Shafik takes you into the cinema of Cairo, which has been one of the biggest producer of movies but has never, you realize when reading this, reached its full potential. Still for people who know so little about the topic, this is a great look at a culture and an industry.

This unique book gives an informal introduction into the non-Euclidean geometries through a series of dialogues between a somewhat grown-up Alice (of Looking Glass fame), her uncle Lewis Carroll, and a visitor from the twentieth century, Dr Whatif. In the story, Lewis Carroll's geometrical beliefs are cast into the Euclidean mould, Dr Whatif asks the penetrating and controversial questions, and Alice acts as a mediator and interested participant. The book is intentionally more mathematical than Lewis Carroll's books, but for those of us who enjoyed Alice's earlier adventures there are many interesting flashbacks to those inimitable characters: the Red Queen, Tweedle-Dum and his twin brother, the Mad Hatter ... The text is filled with humour, wit, and verses of poetry. Part 1 contains the story in six chapters, each of which concludes with a problem set; Part 2 is more mathematical, and looks at the axiom systems, and gives solutions to the problems. The presentation, with its old-time borders, script headings, and cartoon drawings evokes the spirit of the original Alice.

Not a very good book to read

The only reason why I bought this book was because it was required for my Geometry class. I thought it would be an interesting book, but ohhh my godd was I wrong. The writing was very dry and I honestly understood nothing from it! My professor also sucked at explaining the content, so I was confused the entire semester! It was a waste of my money!!!

Nice concept. Out of date exsicution.

I love the idea of the book, to explain math functions in a mix narrative/ theoretical fabric. I would not say the narrative is superficial, but rather, the explanation of "hierarchies" are determined by social relations to class and gender, not influence by the advent of informatics and computer science. The variables, and punchline jokes are not contemporary, quite jarring at female intelligence and acceptance in technical occupations. Certain areas of academia did not exist when this book was writen. I would not recommend this book as assigned reading, because it is very hard to distinguish what you need to believe in order to understand the mathematics, mixed with the social injustice accusations of how the world 'is' that certainly ride the tolerance of my attention. I would, perhaps, read this out loud to young students, after practice and editing of the material.

James Herriot was a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England for over half a century until his death in 1995. Great, classic books

Great, classic books, and Christopher Timothy's performance is excellent. I am only giving it a low rating because it is very unclear from the product description which books in his series you are actually receiving. To me, "The James Herriot Collection" implies the set of four of his most famous books. This set includes only the following three:

1) All Things Bright and Beautiful
2) All Creatures Great and Small
3) All Things Wise and Wonderful

It does NOT include "The Lord God Made Them All."

IF YOU ARE A HERRIOT FAN, YOU WILL LOVE THIS COLLECTION

Purchased this collection for a long drive through New England recently because we have enjoyed the CD's from the series and thought perhaps we would enjoy this as well on our drive. The collection did not disappoint especially since it is narrated by Christopher Timothy and has the same feel of the TV series. We found ourselves chuckling along as we have with the tv series and would highly recommend if you are a Herriott fan. There are about 16 hours on each book and have almost made it through the first book of three.

All Creatures Great and Small

Without a doubt, this show was one of the most superior shows on PBS. I never missed an episode, read all the books and went into mourning when the show went off the air. Now I can go back to Yorkshire and tag along with James Herriot on his vet calls and reminisce right along with him. Christopher Timothy is the perfect choice to narrate and read these books and it's like old home week when you hear him speak and listen to the stories. This is a fantastic set for a great price. If you missed the series on television, you cannot miss these CD's. If you've never read the books, buy this set and be transported back to England and a simpler time. You will love them all as much as I do.

Lots of practice problems

I teach Algebra, and use this workbook for homework practice. It has 2 pages of problems for each section in the textbook, and page 2 is harder than page 1. There are NO ANSWERS in this workbook, to the dread of the students, but the answers are in the Teacher's Edition of the textbook, McDougal Littell Algebra 1 (McDougal Littell Mathematics). This is not a teaching tool, so if you don't know how to do Algebra, this isn't for you, but if you are looking for extra practice problems for students, and have the accompanying textbook, it's great.

This is truly a school textbook. It is meant to compliment a professional teacher's classroom, not homeschool friendly. In fact, it just frustrated my poor son and the online practices were even worse. I wouldn't recommend this for homeschool. A neighbor let me borrow her Saxon Homeschool kit and that brought light back into my son's desire to learn, again.

I know its a novella and cost $1 but this is more like a teaser chapter and probably should be free. I knew its only 57 pages but most novellas are over 100 pages typically and have more than 4 chapters... 2 of which are sex scenes. i like Hart's sex scenes but this was whatever.
I don't see the point of this book at all besides the epilogue maybe.

I like the entire family; however, this book was worth 50 cents. My Kindle showed I read 46- 1/2 pages then the rest of it was about a book on Cade that already released awhile ago. This book consisted of driving into town, having sex in the library, driving home and getting a trust issue resolved that took two pages. Zero story line.
