Must Read for anyone focused on organizational "culture" and values
By drrich711
"I was fully prepared not to like this book. There are days when I feel that I have read EVERYTHING about the topic of hospital culture and patient experience, plus I am not a big "parable" fan. The book surprised me. It is first of all a quick read, which I needed. Second, it makes it's points VERY clearly and explicitly. A few of the key points are 1) Look beyond (or inside) your mission and values statement, or any catchy acronyms to see if you are truly living these values 2) Values need to be OWNED by those in the organization to truly be values 3) Leaders need to support and demonstrate the values 4) You need to devote the time and the resources necessary to make this successful. The creative use of Florence's appearances, the comparisons between the challenges she faced and our own, and the VERY stereotypical characters in the book which we can all relate to, plus a bit of true sentimentality made this a fun and valuable read. Not So Much!
By Carl Poole
I am having a difficult time getting through this book, and the silly story with Florence appearing and disappearing. While I agree with many of ideas and values it promotes, it is trite and over simplified. It is clear by his inaccurate description of nurses in this book, that he hasn't spent much time with them or on the units where they work.
I have been a nurse for 15 years and have always been committed to my patients and gone far and above what has been expected of me. I have lost track of how many times I have been so completely moved by my fellow nurses that I was brought to tears. I have lost track of how many times my coworkers and I have gone without meals and breaks to be with our patients.
In 15 years of nursing, most of the nurses I know have mentioned that they are grateful for their pay as well as the flexibility that nursing has given them. Have I heard nurses complain, yes I have, but it is like anything else. Some nurses won't go the extra mile, just like some teachers, doctors, college professors and grocery clerks. However, anyone who has truly worked beside nurses will tell you that it is a profession where the primary personality you find is "proceed until apprehended"!
It is common to hear that a nurse didn't follow a rule when it came to visiting hours or what a patient was allowed to do, because nurses as a group are strong willed and independent. We're patient advocates and most of us, take this role very seriously. In 15 years, I have never seen a nurse walk past a room and ignore someone who was "wailing" and who had called for help. The author's description of young Timmy was dramatic, but that's about it.
Joe Tye might know something about the lack of ethics and values in executive leadership, but he has a lot to learn about the inner world of nursing.

Right on the money! Not just for hospitals!

An inspirational and educational novel. One of those rare books that I read cover to cover in one sitting. It was a fascinating concept where the founder of the modern day hospital and nursing, Florence Nightingale mysteriously returns to help Carol Jean, a consultant, to help a hospital rebuild its "invisible archecture" or its company culture. Joe Tye has a wonderful way of writing and building upon ideas. Although The Florence Prescription applies to hospitals, you only need to substitute your line of work where it refers to hospitals and you have a terrific resource for analyzing your own business and how not only the public perceives how much you care, or not, but also how your own employees sense how much they care, or not. More importantly it provides a road map of sorts to get your company on tract to be truly great; or not. I have read Joe Tye's other books and this may be his best; they are all worthy of reading.
