A Great Compilation of Essays.

I purchased this book two days ago and have read quite a bit of it. I will say that it is a well comprised "Bible" of general knowledge. It covers the philosophy of dance, what dance is, highlights various methods of dance training, and also has a lot of good general information about a dancer's body. From how they train their bodies through stretching to diet, exercise, rest, stage freight, business, and even what life may be like after a career in dancing.
I have been dancing since I was young and have spent the last five years learning a variety of street styles. As someone who dances as a passionate hobby, I would recommend this book to anyone who might be considering taking up dancing as a hobby for the information on health and training the body. For those seeking a career, this can help get them on the right track, and warns about financial risks, but does not really give a lot of information on how to find agents for freelance dancers. Still, it's worth getting.

My daughter is an aspiring dancer. I purchased this book for a Christmas present this past holiday. The book is a great primer on dancing history, culture, styles and techniques. Her quote was "the best Christmas present this year!"

Great resource for busy young dancers

I bought one copy for my school library and one for a desk copy. This book is a "sampling" of dance concepts, but I find in this busy, "I want it now" world, my young dancers can relate to it. I also greatly appreciate the somatic section because, again, my young dancers won't slow down and take care of their bodies and I believe reading about the importance of the somatic element of body expression will enhance their dancing greatly.
