I appreciated the brief description notes that introduce each recipe. I am also satisfied with the delicious dish I made. Most important of all, I can do Mediterranean meals with really nutritious to make me health, even lose my weight. I love this cook book! I recently fell in love with Mediterranean food a few months ago. So i decided i was going to give cooking it a try.

I love the fact that it gave variety of recipes, from breakfast to dinner. So many to choose from and sounded very easy to make. I have seen other Mediterranean diet books before but this one is my favorite.

Benny Moré was one of the greatest singers to come out of Cuba, and his name evokes overwhelming nostalgia among Cubans and Cuban exiles alike. Known for the power of his expressive boleros, his tributes to beloved guajiro (country) towns, and his exciting, up-tempo songs, Moré was a lightning rod at the center of the golden age of Cuban music. The leader of Banda Gigante, one of the leading Cuban big bands of the 1950s, he was dubbed “El Bárbaro del Ritmo,” the wildman of rhythm.

Moré became an icon of Cuban music, but he died tragically at forty-four and in the larger scheme of political difficulties between the U.S. and Cuba, his legacy was nearly forgotten. Music journalist John Radanovich provides the definitive biography for Moré and reinvigorates his memory with information learned from the musicians who knew and performed with the man himself, as well as his family members. Radanovich also examines the milieu of Cuban music in the 1950s, when Havana was the playground of Hollywood stars and the Mafia ran the nightclubs and casinos.

The great John Radanovich returns with a well told tale of an epic life.

In a very sly way Radanovich bring the reader along on what is a true exploration of some of the larger themes of life. His respect for detailed research is a joy as he weaves the tale of the legendary Benny More as a personal epic tale told by a friend. We travel along on this journey ending a bit too soon as most great trips do. There is no book more important to understanding the world of Cuban music that Wildman of Rhythm.

Benny Moré: The Greatest cuban singer and the best biography

I met the author during the Generoso Jimenez' funeral when I was introduced by the deceased's daughter in 2007. I was skeptical that this white , young bespectacled american man could write a book about "El Benny". After exchanging a few words I realized that John was the person that could do an excellent job and indeed he did!.

Only a couple of small books were written about Benny previously and they were incomplete and in cheap paper as opposed to this masterpiece in hardcover, fine paper with some very good pictures.

From the beginning when the author mentions how he got acquainted with Benny when living in New Orleans and how he started a serious research that took him to Cuba a couple of times in 2000 when he met Generoso Jimenez and 2007 when he visited Benny'house in La Cumbre and talked to Hilda, his daughter.

To ensure that information was accurate he interviewed musicians that actually worked with Benny like Generoso, Chocolate Armenteros, Enrique Benitez and others. The book is divided into 15 chapters in chronological order that cover his youth, african roots, hard life and his move to Havana and all the problems he faced playing in the bars and in the streets for cents, his acquaintance with Miguel Matamoros whose famous trio accompanied Benny in his first recordings and trip to Mexico. Covered in detail is his life in this big city and the problems he faced in this city because he was not a mexican and did not have the musician's union card, his work later when through Chicho (not Chico) Piquero he was able to obtain the union card.

His recording activities with several groups and orchestras like Mariano Merceron, Perez Prado and Rafael de Paz plus others is thoroughly evaluated, his marriage to a young mexican girl plus his work in the movies and acquaintance with artists like Ninon Sevilla, Amalia Aguilar, Pedro Infante is depicted.

Upon his return to Cuba he was already famous but it was not an easy transition and the author digs deep into Benny's activities recording again with Merceron, Ernesto Duarte and others prior to forming his own band.

There are several chapters with tons of information previously unknown and some misinformation or fables are clarified. This book should be read not only by Benny's fans but also music collectors, researchers of cuban music, music teachers, musicians and just about any person who wants to penetrate inside the cuban music and know about this fascinating singer who died too young caused by exccesive drinking.

He was a sociable, very intelligent musician who never went to music school but his feeling and his gift of a privileged ear allowed him to be a great orchestra director. He could not write arrangements but he hired the best arrangers and had them do whatever he wanted for his big band.

His love life, relationship with the mafia dons such as Meyer Lansky and Santo Trafficante as well as President Fulgencio Batista is also covered. His lovig relationship with his musicians that adored and respected him for being understanding and compassionate.

I was impressed for his accurate description of each of his recordings and the story behind them and his trips to Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Panama, New York and California (in these two cities he was accompanied by the great orchestra director Tito Puente).

The author describe in detail the progressive deterioration of his health and the last moments that were very painful that drove me to tears.

Benny's myth has had a meteorical rise in popularity through the years and his records have been selling consistently with reissues and recently, a movie was made about his life. Celia Cruz with whom Benny had a good relationship labelled him "the greatest cuban singer"

Do yourself a favor: buy this book through Amazon where you could get it for less than $20, which is a steal and when you finish reading it, nobody will be able to come to you to tell all the fables and stories about "El Benny' because John covered all the bases and those who don't know much about this legendary singer will start to buy his records.

This biography of one of Cuba's greatest and most beloved musicians was excellent. I could not put the book down once I began reading it. The book also gives great information on other great musicians such as Generoso Jimenez and the exciting nightlife scene of Havana in pre-Castro days. Thank you so much to the author for this gem. I was a young child in Cuba and Benny came to my town to play during carnival time. I still treasure the memory of my brief meeting with the Wildman of Rhythm, such an apt English description for El Barbaro del Ritmo. Even my American born daughter has Benny's hits on her iphone. Who could have told that 50 years after Benny's death, his life and music would still be remembered and cherished by those who knew of him and by generations born decades after his passing. Benny surely would be pleased. Again, thanks so much to the author, John Radanovich, for this jewel.

Charles William Daniel (1871-1955) was a maverick free-thinker whose tiny publishing house had august links with many of the most influential thinkers and movements of the 20th century. To wit, copies of Daniel's books could be found in the library at Ghandi's ashram. This spirit lived on after his death, and the company maintained its niche by publishing definitive texts on a variety of spiritual and esoteric subjects. Many of these titles, notably those on Aromatherapy and Bach Flower remedies, have become standard works on the subject. When the C.W. Daniel list went looking for a new home, the Vermilion and Rider imprints were the natural place for this wonderful collection of authors.

Wanda Sellar is a highly respected aromatherapist of many years' standing. She is based in the South East of England.

A knock-out of a reference book

Starting out, you really can't do much better than this reference. It's an alphabetical listing of many oils along with some history and lore, properties, and usage guidelines. It's a fun, pleasant read (if you can handle a directory-style book) and, best of all, is full of elegant, beautiful illustrations that make it worth the purchase price alone. I really love that Sellar doesn't validate more wild claims as being facts, like other books do. She makes cautious suggestions, making it clear when something can't be documented or attributed. My only fault is that the Kindle version is poorly indexed and it's a little bit of a pain to navigate--something that wouldn't be a problem in a print edition.

This book is wonderful. My teacher was teaching us about aroma therapy and she has the older version of this authors book so I really got to look at it before I bought it. it really has so much about the oils, properties, benefits, and so much more. If your a massage therapist or looking for some herbal remedies this book is great!

Forgotten archetype of a forgotten age

There are no fatherlands. There are no laws of right and wrong. What distinguishes me from a wolf is that I can think as well as fight. This brutal speech could summarize the philosophy of any one of the Successors, the poor provincial nobles of rocky Macedonia who suddenly found themselves in control of the vast territories and hoarded gold of the vanished Persian Empire. They spent that gold on huge warships, vast armies of mercenaries, ingenious war engines, and new cities named for themselves. They fought each other on a scale never seen before, for no better reason than their personal amusement.

Demetrios Poliorketes belonged to the second generation of these Hellenistic warlords, and nobody had bigger ships, vaster armies, more ingenious siege engines, or a more bloated ego. He was the archetype of an age that is mostly forgotten by popular history, lost between Classical Greece and Imperial Rome.

Alfred Duggan often created fictional characters who are deep in self-delusion and denial at the beginning of the book, but gradually wake up to reality. Here he found one ready-made in the pages of Plutarch. Demetrios is convinced that he is reuniting Alexander's empire while actually looting and wrecking it. He thinks he is restoring democratic freedoms to Athens while the Athenians supinely declare him a living god and billet him in the Parthenon. Driven off the land and forced to become a pirate? Just a temporary setback.

This was the first of Duggan's novels that I read as a teenager and it left a powerful impression on me. It hasn't held up quite as well as some others -- one man's egomania can't really support a whole book. Still, it is much better than most of today's trashy historical novels and I hope it eventually gets included in the current Phoenix Press reprint series.

Finally republished

Orion books republished most of Alfred Duggan's novels but never got around to this one. (They also did not republish Founding Fathers and Leopards and Lilies) Duggan's novels are not for those unfamiliar with history as his subjects tend to be more obscure. Rather than write about, say, Atilla the Hun or Augustus, he wrote, for example, a novel of the Roman Emperor Elagabalus and a novel about Lepidus. Regarding Besieger of Cities, the reader will be lost without some familiarity wit the successor period. (The civil wars which followed the death of Alexander the Great) For someone familiar with that era, this may be the only novel to cover the subject. I strongly recommend this novel, as well as Duggan's other novels.

Classic Pollan

I think I've read every one of Pollan's books. I loved some, especially Omnivore's Dilemma, while others were just good (In Defense of Food). With Cooked, there were parts I loved, while other parts I was ready to skim over. In the end, I enjoyed the book immensely, but not as much as some of this others.

Like many of his other books, Pollan divides Cooked into thematic sections (Here: Fire [Grilling], Water [Cooking in water], Air [baking], and Earth[fermenting/pickling]) but they seemed a little forced, as Pollan himself seems to acknowledge. You need fire for three of the four, and yeast plays a pretty big role in both beer and bread. I get what he was trying to do, but it felt like it didn't quite work to enhance the themes of the book rather than merely provide breaking points.

His introduction sets the stage for the entire book. He identifies a dilemma in modern culture: we spend less time cooking than ever but more time watching and idolizing others who cook. Pollan explains that contemplating this dilemma triggered something in him to write this book, and I think he makes an important overarching observation: although cooking may not be the most efficient use of time, it is an alchemic process that transforms both raw foods and people. Without cooking, humans would not be what we are today. The modern trend to remove cooking from everyday life, therefore, is likely to have huge consequences on who we are. As Pollan notes, our fascination with cooking reflects the deep-seated position it holds in our lives.

The book contains long sections with meditations on what cooking is and what it means to culture, both ancient and modern, and for the most part I enjoyed them. For example, although it is somewhat tangential to cooking, Pollan discusses the role that microbiotics play in our gut and the effect on our health. Tying this topic into modern cooking, he raises some very interesting questions about the effect of a "no-microbe" policy on our health. As Pollan excels at pointing out repeatedly, the food we eat today is at the long end of the combined evolution of man and food: we eat what we eat and cook food the way we do because it is necessary to our survival. Removing certain types of food (e.g., whole grain bread, fermented vegetables) without thinking of the consequences is fraught with peril.

The meditations are interspersed with stories about masters of cooking and Pollan's own personal experiences. In each section, Pollan seeks out the masters in each particular field to teach him about cooking. As with his other books, Pollan always finds the philosophers within a certain field that combine their expertise with an ability to discuss their field in a way that opens your eyes. Who knew that bread baking would be so complex and more of an art form than simple mixing? Pollan is a masterful storyteller, combining an ability to explain complex issues with a sharp sense of humor and self-deprecation.

With Omnivore's Dilemma, Pollan changed how I think about the world. For me, Cooked was different in that rather than changing how I see the world of food, he reinforced ideas I already have and gave voice to some subconscious thoughts I had about the importance of cooking my own food. Although I have always enjoyed cooking, Pollan helps highlight WHY cooking is so enjoyable and so worthwhile. I especially enjoyed his section on brewing beer and have been inspired to try to brew my own batch. As he notes in his afterword, many of these endeavors seem at first glance to be an incredible waste of time and totally inefficient. As Pollan explains, however, there is a "satisfaction that comes from temporarily breaking free of one's accustomed role as the producer of one thing -- whatever it is we sell into the market for a living -- and the passive consumer of everything else." Over the course of the book, Pollan successfully proves that cooking is special and shouldn't be given up so easily, and there are benefits to slowing down and becoming immersed in something so basic as the food we eat. So while I can't claim that Cooked is as eye-opening as some of Pollan's other works, I enjoyed it immensely.

Cooking is not just an activity that involves you sweating it out in the kitchen, but it is an art in itself. If done correctly and patiently, using the right ingredients and techniques, you don’t just whip up great dishes, but create memories that will linger on in the mind of those who are lucky enough to eat it.

In Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation by Michael Pollan, published in 2013, the author explores the impact of four of the most powerful elements of nature – air, water, fire and earth – on the food that we eat. From baking to fermenting, he experiments with some of the best chefs in the world to discover how beautifully these four elements shape and cook the food that we so love to eat.

The entire world pauses to read a culinary book that is written by the renowned journalist, Michael Pollan. It is no wonder that after penning down several critically acclaimed non-fiction books based on food and culinary science such as In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, his next piece of work, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, has taken the world by storm. It is difficult to find an author as passionate about food and the role it plays in the evolution of mankind as Pollan. So the book certainly deserves your attention if you love food.

Readers have loved how the food systematically breaks down into the four sections of fire, air, earth and water giving ample explanation of how each of them shape and cook the food separately in their own unique way. It will take you on a journey starting from the basic techniques of cooking to how they have evolved over the centuries, and how this evolution has shaped our society and inter-personal relationships.

The book also makes a point to remind its readers how the modern man is losing his touch with the real methods of cooking. Relying on processed food to take care of our nutritional requirements weakens us and the entire cycle of ecological inter dependence. In fact, the author claims that by adopting a healthier cooking practice, we can fight health issues successfully and go back to restoring our disturbed relationship with nature.

In 2016 Pollan and Alex Gibney turned the book into a 4-part documentary series released exclusively on NetFlix which brought stunning visuals to Pollan’s story.

Yes, Yes, Yes—Reading Cooked Is Worth Your Time and Money

I have been a fan of Michael Pollan's ever since I read Botany of Desire. At the time, I thought he'd never top that book but as his curiosity and passion about food, our food delivery systems, and the fundamental importance of what we eat has increased, he has just gotten better and better.

If you are already a Michael Pollan fan, you appreciate his meticulous attention to detail in his research and his lucid prose. I swear, this guy could take the most complicated subject on the planet and make it accessible to his readers. In Cooked, I think he has reached a new peak in his powers of synthesis and observation.

Cooked is divided into four parts, analogous to the four elements described by the ancient Greeks: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Of these, it was the section on Earth (fermentation) that really made me sit up and take notice. He brings up so many important points about how our Western diet fails us every day, making our lifespans shorter and our health more precarious.

In its way, Cooked is as important a book about health and nutrition as Diet for a Small Planet was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This book will make you think, give you tools to improve your health, and explain how cooking a meal from scratch in your own kitchen becomes an act of rebellion.

So worth your time and the purchase price.
