Barebones Basics

I purchased this and the Quantitative Investment Analysis Workbook' and was slighly disappointed. The workbook is good in that it forces you to workout quantitative problems, but the concept discriptions can be oversimplified. Good if you have a good base and want to review quantitative theory, but don't expect to learn these concepts in-depth.

Workbook was in excellent condition and shipping was fast.

Bought this workbook as well as the book a while back to add to my personal library and completely enjoyed reading the book as well as working all the problems/calculations that came in the study manual (workbook) that can be purchased seperately.

While the book and workbook may not be for everyone I completely enjoyed reading the book and working all the calculations. Would recommend both the book and workbook to others who enjoy reading financial textbooks such as I do. However I would not encourage someone to read it unless they already have a solid understanding of finance otherwise it may be beyond the scope of their comprehension.

Note: This workbook and book were purchased for hobby reading since my academic and professional background is finance, however I am not a CFA or plan on sitting for the CFA Exam.

Wim Westera is full professor of digital media at the Open University of the Netherlands. He holds a PhD in physics (Utrecht University). Some of the historical information was slow going, but there were many good insights. If you like this book, you might also like "The Techno-Human Condition" which has a little more humor.

Highly Recommend This Timely Book

As buyers and businesses become increasingly sophisticated both on- and offline, a new sales model is sorely needed for salespeople and small business owners in the digital age. Such a model is provided by Tim Hughes in this must read book. He explains why social selling is essential for anyone who wants to increase sales by using the interconnected world of social media. Many tools and strategies are laid out for targeting potential customers, forming relationships with them, and closing deals. This is a far more successful approach than going in "cold" as many traditional salespeople and companies do.

Tim Hughes also discusses the vital importance of C-level executives making the change from analogue to digital sales. Unless there is a top-down approach to this change, it can only have limited success. It also suggests that the hiring process itself has to change, as salespeople with integrity and a genuine passion for social selling will be far more successful being "social" in a digital world than salespeople who are faking it.

All in all, this is a common sense, groundbreaking book that should be read by anyone in sales who wants to take full advantage of our digital age.

Not Just Another Book on Social Selling

Why one more book on social selling? Well, this is not one more book on social selling. Tim Hughes plots our path and busts many myths. I especially learned from the segment on Influence and Social Graphs. I've already gone back and re-read several chapters, and I have "stickies" all throughout the book. Salespeople who forget that the word "social" is part of social selling, will take many lessons from this book. Sales leaders--you will finally have a social selling plan and steps to implement. All in 187 pages.

This is one of those books which you finish and realize that the insight gained has saved several thousand dollars in consultancy fees... plus of course the saving of time, energy and effort of learning (unnecessarily) from ones mistakes.

If you are like me and don't like spending unnecessary time, money, effort or energy on unnecessary tasks, I suggest you just do what I did... make the purchase, read the book and begin benefiting (whilst enjoying the read) immediately.

Out of tragedy comes joy

Adorable Grant and Johnny Pine--two of the most unlikely people to find their way into each other's lives. Dori works in a small diner, an unwed mother at 16, whose parents were killed when she was very young, leaving her to be raised by her grandparents. Dori and her son live with her grandfather, who has always been there for her every step of the way. She has been judged and found wanting by her neighbors who consider her a young woman with loose morals, her grandfather's good standing in the community the only thing that keeps them from shunning her totally. Johnny Pine is a 20 year old young man, working to support his two younger brothers. With his father in prison for the foreseeable future and his mother dead from an overdose when he was just 18 years old the good people of the community shake their heads and expect the boys to grow up just like their parents., Johnny struggles to raise his sibllings, barely putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. The eat oatmeal every day, because it is cheap and filling, with or without raisins. When the unthinkable happens, and Dori is left without her grandfather or a place to life, not one of the good people of Blessings, Georgia steps in to help her. She is left stand in the rain with her baby and the diaper bag, alone and desperate. As 20-year-old Johnny watches in disbelief, each of her neighbors walks away, after saying that they'll pray or her. He and his brothers step in and offer shelter to Dori, a most unlikely group of saviors.

Another review mentioned that it was seemingly unrealistic to have two young kids stepping up and taking responsibility for others, and to that I say, hogwash. There are many communities in this day and age, where young people take care of each other out of love and caring for someone other than themselves. They aren't lost on the Internet or chasing the next BBD. This is a story of hope, a story of unconditional love. Stop into Blessings, Georgia, and see for yourself.

Fans of small town contemporary romances are going to fall in love with I’ll Stand By You. Sharon Sala heads back to Blessings, GA where single mom Dori Grant and Johnny Pine, who is the guardian of his two young brothers, fall in love in the midst of hardship.

While she is from the “right” side of the tracks, Dori has weathered more than her fair share of gossip and innuendo after becoming an unwed, teenage mom. With the help of her granddaddy, she has managed to pass her GED and enroll in on-line college classes while also working at a local diner and raising her six month old son, Luther Joe. But one horrible night, Dori loses everything but Luther Joe, and she is shocked when NONE of her neighbors offers to help her out.

Johnny is no stranger to adversity and he is absolutely stunned when Dori’s neighbors abandon her and Luther after her tragic loss. He knows what it is like to be all alone in the world and he does not hesitate to bring them home to stay with him and his brothers Brooks aka Beep and Marshall. Johnny fought hard to keep his brothers after his mother’s death, and although they don’t have much money, he is doing an exemplary job of raising them.

Johnny and Dori are pretty much strangers but they settle into their living arrangements with ease. As word quickly spreads through town about Dori’s plight, most of the townspeople pull together to help her out while others immediately begin spreading vicious rumors about her and Johnny. Fortunately, Dori has a few good people in her corner who are more than willing to stand up for them. And when someone from Dori’s past tries to cash in her good fortune, let’s just say, this person gets EXACTLY what is coming to ’em.

I’ll Stand by You is a charming romance that is a little poignant but very heartwarming. The relationship between Johnny and Dori is soo sweet and even though they fall in love quickly, their feelings for one another ring true. Sharon Sala fully captures both the good and bad of small town life and although there are a few truly despicable townspeople, there are also plenty of kindhearted and generous ones who more than make up for their mean spirited actions. A heartfelt and emotional love story that is incredibly uplifting and gratifying despite the sometimes somber (but always realistic) storyline.

It's the characters that are so important in this series and Sala once again brings us wonderful ones. Not only Dori and Johnny, but Johnny's little brothers and those people in the town who are so willing to lend a hand when needed.

Life hasn’t always been kind to Dori or Johnny, but they have never given up. They work hard at making a good life for those they care about and when life brings them into the same sphere, that dedication expands to encompass both families. But while life keeps throwing them punches, now they have each other and it is so very sweet watching them fall in love. I’m impressed at how, being so young but having to take on so much responsibility, they still manage to keep a good attitude. They aren’t na�ve but they aren’t letting it turn them bitter either. They are such a fantastic match and I was so very happy that they found each other.

As with the other books, Sala continues to bring a great cast of secondary characters … unfortunately not all of them have a good heart. It isn’t always pretty, but Sala manages to do a fantastic job of capturing that small town feel. There are caring people, who help and support those around them, but there are also those that only look out for themselves. It’s both kinds of people that bring Dori and Johnny to their eventual HEA. And while it isn’t always roses and sunshine, thee good definitely outweighs the bad in their lives, which I think is what most of us hope for.

If you haven’t read Count Your Blessings (previously titled Color Me Bad) or Curl Up & Dye, it's OK because all of these books can stand on their own. But it does help to give you an idea of the small Southern town charm and politics that Sala captures so well. And as much as I loved the first two stories, I think this one is my favorite (so far, because I can’t wait to see what Sala has in store for us next).

It offers a unique window into Islamic ethical thought; it presents some of the core teachings of Sufism in a way that is relevant, and not an immediate turn-off, for those who may not be inclined toward Sufism; it offers an expertly done English-language translation of a short, accessible classical text on spirituality and character-building in Islam; and the content of the translation itself is insightful, inspirational, and thought-provoking for both the Sufi adept as well as the casual observer.

In this book, Jackson gives us a translation of The Bride-Groom's Crown, a short manual on Islamic spirituality by the famous Sufi of the Shadhili tariqa, ibn `Ata Allah. He also has a critical introduction at the start of the book that is a must-read for those who have academic or intellectual interest in modern arguments about Sufism in particular or in contemporary Islam more generally.

As for the review written by "Basil," I do not agree at all with its conclusions. The reviewer seems to have made his conclusions based on a haphazard reading of only one section in Jackson's introduction, in which Jackson presents a summary of the major arguments made against Sufism. Nowhere does Jackson say that mysticism is separate from Sufism, nor does he say that there are two different kinds of Sufism (one being mystical, the other focused on character-building). Instead, in his section on "Between Mysticism and Personal Piety," Jackson discusses mysticism and character-building as two different aspects of Sufism as a whole. He specifies these two aspects as a way to point out that while some Muslims may be uncomfortable with the first (mysticism), they would not have a problem with the second (on the development of personal piety). Though some die-hard Sufis may take offense at Jackson mentioning this (as Basil seems to have), this point needs to be made. Jackson seems to be saying that while not everyone would feel comfortable with all that Sufism has to offer, there are critical aspects of it that everyone, and especially every Muslim, should be familiar with.

While Jackson is known for his works on Islamic law, theology, and "Blackamerican Islam," one need not question his academic expertise in Sufism. If there is any doubt as to his qualifications on this topic, the section on "Seminal Themes and Sensibilities" in his introduction makes it amply clear that he knows what he is talking about. Jackson's grasp of some of the most intricate subtleties of Sufi thought is apparent in this section. He brings out the major themes and insights of The Bride-groom's Crown in a way that helps prime the reader for a truly beneficial and well-grounded read through the translation. And if someone is not really interested in all of the contemporary debates on Sufism and mysticism, they can simply skip the Intro and read the translation itself. It is beautiful, and well-worth the read.

Well Translated

A proper representation of the original work aptly reworded into English. A lot of thought was put into the translation and representation of the text and can be clearly seen.
The intro seems to be heavily reliant on a few handful of sources though and might not be the best representation of the Sufi dynamic. Regardless, an enjoyable and at points, entertaining read.
The pricing is a bit steep, also.

Approachable source on Sufism

Prof. Jackson's latest translation (see his 2002 translation of a work by al-Ghazali) demonstrates his facility with creating readable translations from medieval Arabic, no small task. His introduction, which certainly did not set out to be exhaustive, allows English speakers with an interest in Islamic/Muslim spirituality to begin to think about how this work might fit into what they already know about Islam, perhaps particularly in the US. For practicing Muslims in the US who may have grown up hearing only Wahhabist perspectives on Sufism, this approach may allow them to see how many ideas from a thirteenth-century Egyptian thinker like Ibn 'Ata' Allah they find in their everyday understandings of Islam. The translation itself is fluid; one might easily read the whole of it in a few hours. The work is in the style of "popular" hadith collections ("40 Hadith") or works on etiquette, like that of al-Bukhari, which by giving the reader a tidbit to consider, force him or her to engage in a process of conscious consideration of what his or her relationship is with the Divine, and how he or she might want to change it. Some of them include basics like not "backbiting" (don't be snarky!) that generally make for a more productive society. Probably every Muslim who reads this for his or her spiritual growth will want to read some sections again and again, and in this sense having one's own copy is worth the (fairly expensive) price. Paragraph 280 (pp. 128-9) is one of my favorites, about not being so consumed with the fly bothering you that you forget the nearby lion.

The original work is available in a number of Arabic editions; Jackson has made no effort here to provide an exhaustive list or address codicologic or authorship questions, in all likelihood in order to avoid cluttering a text for non-specialists. This is not a criticism, as clearly it was the author's choice to avoid elaborate academic apparati.

Those interested in digging more deeply into scholarship on Sufism should take a close look through the footnotes of the introduction, which provide references to many excellent works by scholars who specialize in Sufism. Prof Knysh's overview of Sufism is similarly designed to help beginners situate themselves, and the citations to his work should not be construed as the limit of Jackson's knowledge on the topic.

Those interested in the early Shadiliya or interested Muslim spirituality will want to read this book.

short and sweet (but if you've been around the JS block, you've heard a lot of this already)

"Maintainable JavaScript" by Nicholas Zakas (O'Reilly 2012) is a short-and-sweet little text on (as the cover says) "writing readable code". And by "readable code", Zakas means "code that other developers not named [YOUR NAME] will be able to read and make sense of and ultimately maintain". It goes beyond maintainable and readable code though--Zakas takes us on a tour of how to deliver high-quality JavaScript that is testable and maximally performant in production. If you look at Zakas' catalog, this subject is right in his wheelhouse, and the book reads like either a sequel to his 2010 "High Performance JavaScript (Build Faster Web Application Interfaces)" or else as an expanded version of Chapter 24 of his 2012 "Professional JavaScript for Web Developers" (3rd edition, and still my favorite JS text). It's an opinionated book about formatting style, about programming conventions, and about ways of helping you (and your team) write code that is a lot less likely to blow up on you down the line.

Right off the bat: the target audience for this book is not advanced JavaScript developers. If you are an advanced JavaScript developer (or even many mid-level JS devs) then these are concepts that you are already familiar with. You've already dabbled in a style guide. You already know to minimize global variables. You already know to use feature detection. And there's a good chance you're *at least* linting, if not testing, if not doing both of those things *automatically* as part of your build. If that sounds like you, then you might want to take a pass. But before you do, give the table of contents a second glance. (If nothing else, you'll feel really validated.)

So who *is* it for? It's for novice and intermediate level JavaScript developers that want to get a better sense of what "readable" and "maintainable" code looks like. It's for folks that are plowing through the other "slim" JavaScript books in the O'Reilly catalog (e.g., "JavaScript: The Good Parts", or "JavaScript Patterns"). It's for technical managers who don't have a JavaScript background. It's for folks that want to start a book club for front-end devs and have spirited debates about ASI and how many spaces to indent when an expression continues on the next line.

As I worked through Part I ("Style Guidelines"), my initial impression was that Zakas was writing a how-to for writing JavaScript style guides. We have 44 pages of in-depth discussion on where to put curly braces, how many blank lines to use (and where), and what a proper comment looks like. Esoteric rationales to inform what (on the surface) seem like so much pedestrian banalia. ("Who cares what I name my local variables?") But by the end, there is a well-reasoned case made for all of the recommendations that will go on to appear in Appendix A.

Where the book becomes more interesting is in Parts II ("Programming Practices") and III ("Automation"). Again: the chapters that comprise Part II are going to seem like review for many seasoned JS devs: keep your JS and your mark-up loosely coupled; avoid global variables; keep configuration data separate from business logic; use feature detection instead of browser detection. As much of these may seem like review (especially if you've been keeping up with Zakas' blog posts), don't get cocky and skim it, either--there are some gems in there. (In particular I'm thinking of the chapter on Event Handling that spawned an interesting post by Ben Nadel.)

The chapters in the Automation section were my favorites. Zakas builds up a solid Ant-based build system over the course of 7 chapters that includes validation and linting, file concatenation and gzipping, minification, documentation, and automated testing. As I've become highly interested in the build process, I was riveted by these chapters. Zakas at least touched on every topic in the automation/build topic that I would have wanted to see. But that being said: I would have loved to see more on this subject. He provides a lot of excellent starter material, and Appendix B is a rich list of other jumping-off points, but it also seemed... shallow? Like he was just scratching the surface? This seemed especially true of the chapters on documentation and testing.

All in all? I would strongly recommend this to folks that are new to JavaScript, but only a mild nudge to seasoned folks.

Good reference to develop clean and maintainable javascript code.

"Maintainable JavaScript" by Nicholas Zakas (O'Reilly 2012) is a very useful book for programmers who have just started writing javascript code or, for intermediate developers who would like to develop clean and maintainable code. The book is written in a very simple language that is easy to understand and follow.

As the title of the book suggests, the book is aimed at capturing the essential aspects of writing javascript code that is easy to maintain. I liked the flow of the book but I felt that the first few chapters in part 1 could be skipped if the reader is aware of the material.

In part 1 of the book (Style Guidelines), Zakas has given in-depth analysis of styling guidelines to follow that are sometimes skipped when writing large pieces of Javascript code. He touches upon styling guidelines such as: naming conventions, adding comments in the code, understanding the usage of semi-colons etc.,. Some good example use cases and the methodology of using the style guides is presented so that these ideas stick in your mind and become part of the programmers habits.

In part 2 (Programming Practices) - I especially liked the chapter 6 on `avoid global variables' since I have used global variables in my JavaScript but did not think through the caveats of using them. Similar to part 1 of the book, I liked the use cases that the author proposed to describe advantages and disadvantages of several programming aspects that are described in the section. In addition,one of the best described chapters in this section is the material on throwing your own errors (helping you to debug JavaScript code) which I do most of the time using firebug tool on Firefox. Even though this method works I might have to start using some of the techniques described by Zakas in the book, using fascade design pattern on top of objects that are not yours (very interesting outlook) etc.

Part 3 - I like this section a lot especially the material on minification, compression of JavaScript files as the script code adds time delay in loading of the page on the browser. Compression, minification techniques described by the author will definitely help with improving the load performance of the page in the browser.

Some of other things that would have helped me or any other intermediate JavaScript developer is inclusion of example or exercise files for some sections in `part 2'. Examples and exercise files would have helped the understanding of chapters 10, 11 and some sections in part 3 like chapter 17.

It is also interesting to know that author did make an attempt to include Html5 changes for JavaScript in some chapters of part 2 of the book.

I would recommend this book if you are an intermediate developer like me or novice developer for JavaScript code and would like to work towards methods for improving your code and writing a maintainable javascript code as this is book easy to understand and follow.

A worthy sequel to Douglas Crockford's Javascript: The Good Parts.

It's easy to blaze your own coding trail, perhaps particularly so with Javascript. This book provides a comprehensive glimpse into the workflow and practices of an experienced Javascript developer. It's a good read whether you're blazing your own trail or trying to clear one for a group.

A nice survey of style guidelines found in several libraries and well-known approaches to coding Javascript including JSLint and JSHint.

Programming Practices
Presents a great deal of information from both the author's experience and general theory. I learned something even in the areas in which I was already familiar.

Automation
Convincing arguments for automation with helpful examples.

Maintainable Javascript reads like a worthy sequel to Douglas Crockford's Javascript: The Good Parts.
