The Richard Strauss enigma...

Many biographies of the most famous German composer of the 20th century have been written, and much time has been spent discussing his political and social opinions since he chose to remain in Germany throughout the Nazi years. This biography is readable, includes many personal little anecdotes not included in other books, and also some of the political discussion, together with excerpts of letters from and to Strauss. It has excellent photos which make the subject more accessible, together with family photos and locales. It covers his life, compositions, anecdotes, and some discussions of his politics, all in one easy to read book. I have read several biographies of Strauss, and found this one to be very personal, entertaining, and informative. It is recommended to any student of German history, musical history, or Strauss in particular.

Best English-language guide to Strauss the man

You can derive pleasure and profit from other books on Richard Strauss, notably Michael Kennedy's (my review of Kennedy's latest Strauss tome is already on Amazon.com) and Norman Del Mar's; but nobody can claim to know Strauss the human being who has not read Kurt Wilhelm's magisterial account. Wilhelm brings the day-to-day behavior of Strauss and his family to life, in a way that no previous biographer -- however diligent -- has managed to do. You finish this production feeling as if you have met the man.

Wilhelm appears to have been given the run of Strauss-related archives at Garmisch, Bavaria, which earlier chroniclers either couldn't or simply didn't use. Old enough to have corresponded with Strauss in person, Wilhelm (who spent part of the Nazi period in jail) is neither oppressively autobiographical nor mindlessly sycophantic: just quizzical, fair-minded, and courageous in his judgements. I don't imagine Strauss himself would have wanted any other sort of tribute.

The pity is that for this English translation (which itself reads very fluently), the original German text has been considerably cut. It remains a splendid book anyhow; but one wonders why any of it had to be omitted. Do English-speaking readers, even in the brave new world of LITTLE BRITAIN, deserve to be treated as morons?

One curiosity of the book is the author's oddly sympathetic reference to Hans Frank, whose favorable disposition to Strauss (as well as to Gerhart Hauptmann and Hans Pfitzner), the author describes as "always . . . fair, friendly and helpful."

I used to think that small talk is for people who don't know what to talk about and just wanna fill up the blanks....

This book is a great guide to show, prove and teach that small talk is actually a crucial social skill to master the game of life.
It helped me a lot to become less dry, more fun and more ....just myself.

I especially liked the principle 4 about your life being a series of (mini) stories. In the past I used to think that I did not have anything interesting to tell people and above all strangers. I always remain at the factual level in conversations. I was boring lol. Now I open up much more easily and the tips helped me to know how to find stories to tell that I already have within me.

Chatterbox Queen's Two Cents

As someone who doesn't need much coaching on the art of small talk or chatter, I was curious to check this book out and see what tips people who are uncomfortable speaking/interacting in social scenarios are getting. All in all the book isn't too off point. I definitely employ quite a few of these in my everyday conversations at work and in my personal life. I would caution against Cold Reads and talking exhaustively in a conversation though. There's much to be said about comfortable silence as well.

Like every other advice book, take it with a grain of salt but there's definitely some value to it. Not bad for a short and inexpensive read.

I think this book is really perfect for me some time talk more that need and made some embracing situation, this book have many good guideline that we can control our talking and know how to talk with any one and many suitable communication skill developing tools. Over all I like this book really helpful book.

Standards-based and VERY pertinent to today's issues

I am a high school chemistry teacher. This book is by far the best I've seen at introducing chemical issues AND rudimentary chemistry at the same time. It is very heavily text-based, and there is minimal math. However the dense reading must be taken slowly by some students-- especially younger students with challenged reading levels. This book is perfect for conceptual or environmental chemistry classes, and the exercises promote deep and analytical thinking. The definitions are lightly highlighted, and there are valuable web resources and links within the text as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about how chemistry applies to global climate change, acid rain, and alternative energy. Excellent!
