Liked the instructional tenor of the book. There is a plethora of literature on web on JMeter. This book neatly compiles all the relevant details in a linear 'easy to relate and connect' narrative. The chapter on distributed testing is good. Suggest you add some examples on how to launch distributed testing from an EC2 cloud nodes. A set of ready to use public images for EC2 will help further - will rate 5 after you have done so.

This is not a 5 star publication. There is a lot of missing information. Other reviews are inaccurate. I did not expect a lot for $19, but I am returning my copy of the book. I can only assume that the lack of publisher info on or in the book means that it is self-published which as a writer I always want to support, but this book was an insult to my experience as a 30 year veteran of software development and QA.

Very good starting point

Professor Kline's book offers a very readable account on a rather confusing subject. The theory is explained clearly, plenty of examples are presented, and specially, there is a good deal of interpretation exercise. If you're also interested in principal components analysis, don't miss I. T. Jolliffe's book.

An Easy Guide to Factor Analysis by Paul Kline is perhaps not so easy. I am not sure Kline has a grasp on what that means. Perhaps easy to an expert already, but I have certainly read mathematics texts that cover complicated subjects and do a much better job of introducing them than this one.

So, you may want to look elsewhere for something that does a better job of that, examples, etc.

It has become increasingly evident that the social science fields need to evaluate theories and their underlying constructs empirically. If you are similar to myself as a graduate student, you needed to overcome your fears of using factor analysis in your research. This text is excellent for clarifying issues glossed-over in your basic statistics courses, without being too "techie" in its approach. This is a great startup book on factor analysis for fledgling researchers.

About the Author
Lundy Bancroft has 14 years of counseling and clinical supervising experience in over 2,000 cases working with batterers. He also served extensively as a custody evaluator and child abuse investigator, appeared as an expert witness in child custody and welfare cases, and led groups for teenage boys exposed to domestic violence. He has been training judges, probation officers and other court personnel on men who batter and on battering’s effects on children. He co-authored articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Contemporary Psychology and is co-creator of two nationally marketed curricula, one for working with batterers and one for teen-dating violence in schools. In addition, he completed a study for the state of Massachusetts on approaches to meeting the service needs of children exposed to domestic violence.

Jay Silverman is Professor of Medicine and Global Public Health at the University of California at San Diego. He is a developmental psychologist with 20 years of experience in domestic violence, including direct counseling experience with hundreds of men who batter. He has led multiple, large-scale international and domestic research programs on issues of gender-based violence against women and girls; this work has resulted in more than 100 peer-reviewed studies. His research has included examinations of the social contextual influences on the etiology of male-perpetrated partner violence, the nature and health consequences of adolescent dating violence, history of child abuse among men who perpetrate partner violence, judicial behavior and the experiences of battered mothers in child custody cases, the role of partner violence in men’s transmission of HIV to their female partners, the nature and HIV risks associated with trafficking of women and girls for sexual exploitation, and the roles of partner violence in unintended and teen pregnancy, coercion regarding abortion, pregnancy loss, and infant and child morbidity and mortality.

Daniel Ritchie, M.S.W., has worked with military veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse and with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of psychosocial issues including domestic violence. He has contributed to work published in Smith College Studies in Social Work.

A very interesting and informative book for anyone in the social work or counseling field. Would even be good for teachers to recognize signs of issues going on at home. Borrowed a copy from my college adviser but decided to get my own copy to have for future reference. A definite worthwhile purchase. This would also be good for law enforcement to read some of the chapters to recognize the behaviors of the batterer. Things you dont even realize are going on are suddenly very obvious after reading this.
I bought this at full price for my own use and was not at all compensated for this review by the seller.

Another fantastic and brave book

This is another fantastic book by Lundy Bancroft. His other two books (Should I Stay or Should I Go and Why Does He Do That?) have been a great help to me in my personal life. I have recommended his books to friends, who are social workers like myself, and they have given me good feedback. We have agreed that a lot of what is said in the books feels true to our lives and not like theory written from afar. I have read some criticism regarding Bancroft's lack of formal qualifications. This may be so, but his lived experience in the field is obvious and resonates with what I have seen and experienced more than anything else I have read. This male insight into what some other men feel and do is very helpful to me as a woman. I also use his books with the women I work with. I have recently begun work as a custody evaluator in the family court in Western Australia and I only wish the judges in our courts and other lawyers would read his stuff. I am disturbed by the collusion of our courts and our child protection system with male perpetrators of violence towards their partners and the re-abuse of so many mothers going through the family courts. The knowledge, references and resources contained in this thoroughly researched but easy to read book have the potential to help so many women and children.

This is a must for partners, mates who live with two different thoughts and ways…..that puts the other one feeling crazy.

In the preface of this book, on Narcistic persons, my life was nailed. It was so on in describing how
this kind of person things only about themselves and the horrors they, man or woman, put their family
thru. My life was in danger many of times, as I did not want to go on. I had five children from this
marriage that needed us, but he was not their for us. Lundy Bancroft knows his business, and what
he said was just all of what I lived thru. He knows his business.

Great Cookbook But...

This is a great cookbook, especially for somone like me who is not filipino but my husband is. Therefor needed a resource for cooking those great foods his mother cooks all the time. I came today to actually buy another copy for my mother-in-law who was very impressed with my cooking lately. The milk candy was a big hit at Christmas. However I did notice the same problems as one of the other reviewers. My prime example is the Leche Flan, he lists in this recipe that to make the carmel to use water with the sugar in a pan and cook until sugar is browned. Actually you use no water and then once it has carmalized only a small amount to keep it from crystalizing in your pan. Since I don't know any better I had to do this 3 times and consult other cookbooks before getting it right. If I am unsure about the contents of a recipe I talk to my Mother in law first. The fish soup was another of these, the ingrediants don't come together and make it taste right. The tocino is to complicated when you can by ready made tocino mix and not use the nasty chemical it calls for. But on an upside alot of the other recipes have made me a wonder in the kitchen for our filipino parties and my inlaws have been bragging about my cooking. Overall it's a good book as long as you have a good grasp on filipino cooking as a whole. Clearly I like enouph to purchase a second for my inlaws to have.

Great book. Highly recommended.

Sandeep was the instructor for our E-commerce MBA class (University of Washington Bothell, Class of 2002), and we had the pleasure of 'revewing' initial drafts of some of the book's chapters. Most e-commerce books have been written by IS professionals and academics, focusing on information architechture and process redesign. A key reason for my preference of this book over other similar books, is the author's big-picture yet detailed focus on business models, maketing and technology (technical overview of the Internet). I suspect the author's background in marketing played an important role in designing this book with this three-pronged, interdisciplinary approach.

My Husband teaches third and fourth year university students, and found this to a valuable resource for an e-commerce management paper. His comments:

This is well written (interesting even!) and informative on business models and relatively current cases, the book avoids getting into technical detail. Excellent for the purpose of getting IT strong students to think about where they fit and how their skills can complement others.

I would suggest that this text be useful for senior IT or Management students alike.

About the Author

Matthias Kalle Dalheimer is the President & CEO of Klaralvdalens Datakonsult AB, a Sweden-based consultancy specializing in platform-independent software solutions. He is also a founding member of the KDE project and the current president of the KDE foundation. Kalle has written numerous books for O'Reilly, both in English and in his native German, including "Running Linux" and "Programming with Qt". In his spare time, he enjoys cross-country skiing and reading history books. Kalle lives with his wife Tanja and his two sons Jan and Tim in the middle of the forest near Hagfors in the Swedish province of Varmland.

Matt Welsh is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. His current research focuses on wireless sensor networks, including operating systems design, distributed systems, networking, and parallel computing. Matt is a long-time Linux advocate and developer, a role in which he has fielded questions from thousands of Linux users over the years. He was the original coordinator of the Linux Documentation Project and author of the original "Linux Installation and Getting Started" guide. He completed his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley.

Great book

Although I use Linux for a variety of things (usually Apache/Tomcat or SAMBA), I don't use the OS enough to really attain expert status and stay there. I've found that this and many of the other O'Reilly Linux books have been invaluable references for me to keep my network straight.

Another good one is the O'Reilly "Linux Security Cookbook", although if you currently use ipchains and iptables all day you won't get much out of it; it's more for the admin that doesn't have to mess with their config too much.

Nice to see a new edition

Just the fact that this is the fourth edition should tell you how good this is. I never owned the first edition, and skipped the third. By page count, this is only 42 pages longer then that second edition, and yet it immediately seemed to me that there is much more here.
There is. Obviously there have been cuts too - warnings and workarounds for problems and situations that no longer exist, reduction of some tables and listings that probably never were really necessary. There are new chapters (I don't know if they are new from the 3rd edition), and new sections.
I like that the book provides a fair amount of troubleshooting information along with its basic introductions. Of course, that does mean that it will quickly become outdated, just as previous editions have. Some Amazon reviews complain about this sort of thing, but I still think it's better to include it.
Other reviews have complained that this isn't a beginners book. Perhaps it is not - I hesitated before including it in that category, but ultimately decided that it still belongs there even though it may be a little more advanced than a rank beginner might desire. Actually, I'm not even sure that's fair: a rank beginner will find this useful; it's just that they may find it a bit overwhelming too. This isn't "Linux for Dummies", it is very comprehensive and has more than sufficient detail in every area it covers.
Not too many of us will be able to dismiss this as "just stuff I already know", either. I picked up things in just a casual skimming, and even more when I went back to read carefully. Of course that is hard to do when you already have a fair amount of experience, but it's worth the effort.

Excellent

I was in a urgent need of some fairly serious Linux bootcamp. This book worked, and this is how:

I hadn't had any significant Linux experience prior to buying this book. Sure, I knew a few basic UNIX commands, who doesn't?

After installing Ubuntu it became clear that I simply will have to spend too much time googling solutions for every problem. I went ahead and bought this book, read it cover to cover in about two days, and my fluentness in Linux administration/programming has increased dramatically. I still have to google some specifics (like Postfix/MySQL integration issues), but most of what I needed for my work, was in this fairly thin book.

Note that it is not focused on any particular distribution, and most of the tasks are explained with several major distros in mind. I kind of appreciated that also, since it only reassured my decision to go with a Debian-based Ubuntu.
