About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology (Emeritus) at the University of Notre Dame. The author or editor of over 25 books and hundreds of essays and reviews, his books reflect his interest in the history of Christian spirituality, hagiography, the intersection of theology and culture, as well as the relationship of contemplation and action. Cunningham is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and the winner of Notre Dame's Presidential Award for service to academy and church (2002) and the Christus Magister award from the University of Portland in 2011 for distinguished scholarship and teaching. He has served as a visiting lecturer in this country and in Europe, Asia, and South Africa. His most recent academic book is INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and is currently serving as the Christianity editor for the forthcoming NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD RELIGIONS.

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

Deceiving pictures

I did not want to give this book a bad rating because honestly, I have no idea if this is a good book or not. The problem I had with it is that the pictures on the amazon website are deceiving. This book contains the readings for the culture and values book, as the title says. However, when you click on the picture that says "look inside" it shows pictures of the real book Culture and Values, and not for Readings for Cunningham/Reich's Culture and Values. When I bought this, I thought I was buying the real book. Apparently not. I ended up having to return the book. I write this so this does not happen to you. Hopefully Amazon can fix this issue.

This book is a very lucidly written one in the area of probabilitistic applications in mechanics and vibratrions. The first chapter is an introduction in to the history of probability and its roots. The book begins with an introduction to probability and probability distributions and this is covered in the initial couple of chapters. The second chapter deals with the basics of probability involving set thory. The third and fourth chapters deals with the basic concepts of probability and deals with different probability distributions in practice. In the next couple of chapters the concepts of derived distributions are covered. The concept of derived distributions along with transformations used are covered in the fourth and fifth chapters. The theory of random functions are covered in the sixth chapter. Then the application of probability and stochastic processes to structural mechanics for example stability, vibration theory have been covered. The final chapter is on the random number generation. It deals with Monte Carlo simulation of probability distributions and random functions.

Well worth the price

A nice, interesting book with a lot of useful information on probabilistic structural analysis, but does not follow the current industrial practice that is leaning towards stochastic FEA and FORM/SORM based limit state analysis. If you want to understand modern structural reliability theory, or plan to work in probabiistic design, I would strongly reccomend the textbooks by Haldar & Mahadevan. In short, Prof. Elishakoff's book will be a nice companion volume, but not a main reference. Cant beat the price, though.

Amazing debut

Peter Storey's "Human Nature" is one of most amazing debut collections for a young author. The first story, "Day Ten" is very reminiscent of Raymond Carver, yet Storey has an outstandingly unique and original voice. This is especially evident in "Train to Where?", which wants to break away from narrative fiction and into poetry in some places. He has a way with composition, capturing realistic detail in a way that makes reading an experience of all the senses and yet at the same time deftly employs metaphors in the service of description so that the settings are at once realistic and incredibly dreamlike -- the "Dynastic Empire of Juniper" in "Day Ten" or the thunderstorm in "Train to Where" are supreme examples. Many philosophers throughout history have reagarded human nature as fundementally flawed or fallen and therefore requiring the state or church to restrain its destructive and anti-social tendencies, but even they would derive great enjoyment from Peter Storey's "Human Nature."

Some solid short stories

Stumbled on this title looking for post-modern short fiction, was drawn in by its low price, simple description and unintentional pun in the author's name. I liked the diverse settings -- Brooklyn, Wisconsin and a pre-historic forest -- and the variability of the language Storey used. Also, "The Crushing Futility of Everyday Existence" may be the funniest short story ever written since "The Overcoat".

The Pandorica Opens Food for Thought

Frank Collins' intriguing book Doctor Who: The Pandorica opens is an intriguing mix of insight and context into Series 5 of Doctor Who.

Series 5 is the first year viewers see Matt Smith in the role of this iconic Doctor. The use of the Pandorica in the title is a message in itself. Like Pandora's Box of mythology, what the Pandorica itself holds, in Doctor Who, is perhaps not what one might expect, and can be used in a way that one also might not expect.

Viewers and fans of Doctor Who may have their own opinions about the new Doctor, about the direction of the series under Mr. Steven Moffat, writer and now producer of the show. That is as it should be. Mr. Collins, a self-acknowledged fan, demonstrates his knowledge of the episodes, both current and "classic", and his ability to weave together both in context, with connections between classic and current in scenes, bits of dialogue, and character. Mr. Collins also aptly and ably provides an understanding of the symbolism and significance of the current characters, based on the analyses of fairy-tale, mythology, fantasy literature, and just perhaps a good dose of common sense observation of how people interact (in this sense, even the Doctor is considered "people"!)

This reader does not always relish reading reviews of episodes by other individuals. Enjoyment of a book or tv show is often a very personal matter, and not every fan will agree on every point. I am also not at all knowledgeable about how fairy-tale and fantasy speak to the human psyche. I generally just enjoy watching Doctor Who because--well--I find the Doctor's character (in any regeneration, but admittedly especially now) engaging, charming, whimsical, boyish--and a few other adjectives. After reading Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens, I have somewhat more of an appreciation for the creative process behind the character, for the dynamic of the show, for the vision of the storyteller, and the talent of the actor. I do marvel that with many of his points, it felt like he had been in my own head, as we agreed on many. Even where we disagreed, and yes there were a few--I have my own opinion of the character of River Song and her place in the story frame, for example--I do really appreciate the new insights from various areas of psychology and myth-study.

I hope that Mr. Collins plans more analyses of some kind for the show.

With a keen understanding of the underlying mythos of the series, the author near effortlessly links those embedded tropes to the wider, far-reaching tapestry of popular cultural trends, advanced media theory and deep critical analysis that impresses by the sheer bravura of its scope.

Glowing with a deep and abiding affection for its subject matter, both the book and the often surprising conclusions it offers up to the reader; artfully treads the tightrope of successful serious criticism balanced with a respect for its subject with subtle wit, flair and a wholly engaging prose style that is as impressive as it is welcome.

Although the reader might not always find themselves agreeing with all of the author's findings - I guarantee that even during those rare instances of disagreement, they will still find themselves appreciative of the intelligence with which they find their views challenged.

Make no mistake; I'm convinced that this is an important book in the field of not just Doctor Who, but also of media criticism as a whole. Frank Collins is not only to be applauded for presenting us with a volume worthy of the quality of the series it addresses - but also for throwing wide the door allowing us a different way of looking at it.

To say that I await the author's next work with keen anticipation would be an understatement.

In the central character of Nora, Ibsen epitomized the human struggle against the humiliating constraints of social conformity. Nora's ultimate rejection of a smothering marriage and life in "a doll's house" shocked theatergoers of the late 1800s and opened new horizons for playwrights and their audiences.
But daring social themes are only one aspect of Ibsen's power as a dramatist. A Doll's House shows as well his gifts for creating realistic dialogue, a suspenseful flow of events and, above all, psychologically penetrating characterizations that make the struggles of his dramatic personages utterly convincing. Difficult problems, difficult solutions

What I found most remarkable about this play is how much it resonates some 130 years after it was originally written. Nora today would not, of course, face the lies and deceit necessary to pay for her husband's health-giving trip. Still, though, how many wives today feel trapped by their roles as wives and mothers, with no real outlet to discover their true selves, their true strengths? Women may have more freedoms, but how many times, when a mother leaves her husband and children, do we assume something is wrong with her, that she is just being selfish, and not look at what her husband, and society, has done to make her feel she must take this desperate step. I wish I had read this play before I was married. My life choices may have been drastically different. (Then again, maybe not!)

A Portrait of Marriage in Ibsen's A Doll's House

The Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen subjects his writing to the intricacies of marriage time and time again. He seems to have an omniscient power and ability to observe the sacrament itself, along with the fictional characters whom he creates to engage in these marital affairs. Such is the case with his classic drama, A Doll's House.
The play raises questions about female self-sacrifice in a male-dominated world. Nora is a "wife and child" to Torvald Helmer, and nothing more. She is his doll, a plaything on display to the world, of little intellectual value and even less utility in his life. Thus it is logical for Helmer to act so shockingly upon his discovery that Nora has managed financial affairs (typically a family responsibility reserved for the patriarch) without so much as his consent or knowledge. What, then, is the play saying about women by allowing Nora to act alone and independently, all the while allowing her to achieve little success in doing so?
Such an apparent doubt by the playwright of the abilities of women is quickly redeemed by Nora's sudden mental fruition, as though she, in the course of a day or so, accomplishes the amount of growing up to which most persons devote years and years. She has developed the intuition and motivation to leave behind everything she has lived for during she and Helmer's eight years of marriage in exchange for an independent life and the much-sought virtue of independent thought. Nora suddenly wishes to be alone in the world, responsible for only her own well-being and success or failure. She is breaking free of her crutches (Helmer, her deceased father, the ill-obtained finances from Krogstad) and is now appetent to walk tall and proud.
Through the marital madness of Helmer and Nora, Ibsen is questioning the roles of both husband and wife, and what happens when one person dominates such a relationship in a manner that is demeaning to the other, regardless of whether such degradation is carried out in a conscious, intended frame of mind. Ibsen is truly a master playwright, and his play A Doll's House is truly a masterpiece.

Ibsen himself said that this play was about human rights, not womens rights, and i think that this is true. Nora was constantly belittled by Helmer and had never been given the chance to grow up. She had been treated like a doll in a dolls house, first by her father and then by her husband, who she had been passed on to. Although it seems trivial, even the mere fact that she was forbidden to eat macaroons is significant. People may well say that a womans first responsability is to her family, and children especially, i think that it is ultimately to herself. Nora closing the door at the end of the play is very significant - she is closing the door on that part of her life. Torvald realised what he had done in the end, but by that time it was far too late for anything to be changed. Although i studied this play in school, i really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who will listen. Nora managed to break out of the life she had been confined to, that many of the women of her time were confined to. (i studied this play for a-level and wrote, like 100 essays on it, can you tell?)

Probably one of the best impulse buys I've made in a while!
I have an almost three-year-old son who is too young to watch the Star Wars movies and understand them.
That's where this book comes in!
There are 11 short stories with lots of colorful pictures and easy-to-read dialogue. And I was REALLY impressed that the dialogue is verbatim from the movies themselves, not watered-down paraphrases. So when my son reads these stories and finally does get to watch the movies, the two will match up perfectly without any inconsistencies in dialogue or plot.
I was also pleased with the selection of stories. One each from the three prequels and then two each from the original trilogy and the Force Awakens movie that is out now!
If you want a good bedtime book for your child this is the children's book you're looking for!

The Force is strong with this book

This book is a HUGE hit with my 7-year old. He is in love with Star Wars so I ordered this for Christmas. We’ve been reading a story from it almost every night since. The book is great because it has a wide variety of stories that span the Star Wars sagas. Some of the stories he is familiar with either from watching one of the movies or the Clone Wars/Rebels series and some of the stories were tales he wasn’t familiar with. It’s provided a lot of detail for discussions in our house. I like that the stories are entertaining but not too long for a bedtime story, especially when we sometimes end up reading more than one story.

Fun book. Age appropriate. I have one problem with it... Luke has 2 hands in the "Rescue from Jabba's Palace" chapter. I know it's nerdy but it's canon.
