William Lowrie is Professor Emeritus of Geophysics at the Institute of Geophysics at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he has taught and carried out research for over thirty years. His research interests include rock magnetism, magnetostratigraphy, and tectonic applications of paleomagnetic methods.

Completely unreliable!!!!

I tried to use this book as an "updated" textbook for an introductory course on Physics of the Earth (second year geophysics major) I had to taught. Since my area of research is paleomagnetism and rock magnetism the name of William Lowrie was sort of a guarantee that the book would be good. However, in the middle of the term I had to switch back to the "great classics", namely Stacey's and Garland's books. There are several problems with this book, firstly most of the formulae are presented out of the blues without a comprehensive deduction. That is not the most serious problem though, I also found several mistakes in the 2000 edition (I do not know if further editions took care of these problems). Some of these mistakes are pretty serious. As an example: he states that the international formula for the gravity normal to the Earth's ellipsoid derives directly from MacCullah's formula. That is not correct since in MacCullah's formula the centrifugal term coming from Earth's rotation is not considered!!!! There are also lots of minor mistakes related to missing terms in several formulae and derivatives. I did not touch the chapters related to geomagnetism and rock magnetism but I gather they should be the best in the whole book (I really hope so!!!!) since that is precisely William Lowrie's field of research. However I would not recommend this book at all.

A very good intermediate level book

I consider this book a very useful reference. It does not point to advanced and still unresolved issues as a book as "Physics of the Earth" by Stacey and Davis does (which I consider advanced) but that is not its goal. The topics are covered extensively and in an accessible manner. Details left out from derivations can be found in the accompanying "Student's Guide to Geophysical Equation". I used the two together and the couple is a good standalone tool to study geophysics.

Let's be sincere

This book is what its title says "FUNDAMENTALS", I think it's a pre-basic book about Geophysics. There are other books better than this one, i.e. Telford's "Applied Geophysics" and Garland's "Introduction to Geophysics" (this is what Mr. Lowrie says).

This book has nothing to do with the actual CCSK. I didn't notice the other reviewer's comments or I would have saved myself the money. Don't spend .10 on this book if you are looking for anything specific about the CCSK, this is nothing but common sense general test taking tips, interview approaches etc.... Amazon should stop selling this worthless junk

About the Author
Bradrick A. Joyner was born on April 2nd, 1988, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Aside from writing and lecturing, he is a Father, musician, philosopher, and an active Freemason. Bradrick attended Middle Tennessee State University where he studied The Recording Industry: Productions and Technologies, then later on became a certified Pro-Tools Operator in Music. This gave him the fulfilling opportunity to work as a professional musician and audio engineer. Shortly after the birth of his son in 2011, Bradrick decided to transition from music into the world of writing. In 2014, he published his first book titled: "Ethics, Deductions, & Common Sense." Since then, Bradrick has been requested to speak at over 50 engagements, with topics ranging from Traditional Occult History and Philosophy, Comparative Religion, Freemasonry, Meditation, Tarot, Moral Psychology, Theosophy, and more. Bradrick's writing has been described as "energetic" and "concise." His ability to explain in-depth concepts with ease while keeping his readers and listeners engaged makes for a rare and satisfying experience. An excellent guide. A must have.

I had the opportunity of reading this book prior to its release. Brother Joyner does an excellent job of weaving the spiritual and esoteric elements of Freemasonry into a succinct narrative that is easy to consume. The clarity of his delivery enables the reader to understand and contemplate the jewels of our Craft without going off the deep end of the mystical pond.

This is an excellent guide for Masons, young and old.

Great book for a new EA as well a someone that is beginning or revisiting Masonic education. This is a quick but good read that does a wonderful job of stimulating further questions and encouraging deeper thought.

Absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation

This short read is an absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation of the initiation ritual of an Entered Apprentice into the Craft of Masonry. I read it in less than a day. The author's writing style in short, crisp sentences, as opposed to long-winded, academic verbiage, makes the explanation of concepts and symbols completely understandable. I especially liked the part on creative visualization. As a Mason of ten years, I found more insight in this short book than I have in any Lodge program. The author even explains why Lodges are lacking in this education within these pages! I highly recommend this book by Brother Joyner to any new EA or any Master Mason still trying to figure out how to map his personal journey. I rank The Masonic Initiate right up there with another of my favorite books on deciphering Masonic origins: The Craft Unmasked by Brother Dr. John Nagy. Looking forward to reading your upcoming books on the next two degrees, Brother Joyner!

About the Author

Dr SB Bhattacharyya, is a practising family physician and health informatics professional. He studied at Medical College, Bengal (aka Kolkata Medical College), graduating with MBBS from Calcutta University in 1986, before completing his MBA studies in 1997 with capstone thesis on telemedicine.

He has been associated with a number of MNCs in India as a domain expert in the field of Health Informatics that include iSOFT India, Oracle, GE Healthcare, and currently, Tata Consultancy Services. In this capacity he primarily functions as business solutions architect for IT systems in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and medical devices domains. In the past he has also been medical administrator of several small and medium-sized hospitals, besides being a practising family physician.

He is Member, National EHR Standardisation Committee, MoH&FW, Government of India, Healthcare Informatics Standards Committee, Bureau of Standards for India, and Honorary State Secretary, Indian Medical Association Haryana State

for 2015 IMA Year. He was President, Indian Association for Medical Informatics for the 2010 – 2011 session, having previously served as Treasurer and Secretary of that association.

Waste of time and money.

There are many good books about The Morrigan available. This is NOT one of them. It is poorly reseached. The author makes connections based on his feelings. Don't waste your time. Read Stephanie Woodfield's Celtic Lore and Spellcraft of the Dark Goddess, one of Morgan Daimler's books on The Morrigan, or Morpheus Ravena's The Book of the Great Queen which are all well written and we'll researched.

Guidance not Dogma...

When considering this work, the reader will need to keep in mind that it is not intended as a scholarly / historical treatise on the history of the Great Queen...it is more of a reflection on the author's experience over time and the process of integrating those experiences into the larger context of available history / literature.

Personally, I enjoyed the work overall - the author has an easy, conversational style, and much of his experience matches my own. As supplemental material for someone looking for a way to incorporate the mythology, it can be helpful; if looking for primary source material, the reader is advised to brush up on their archaic Gaelic and consult the available (if fragmentary) literature.

A Feast of Information

Christopher Penczak has done it again. His new book on the Celtic crow goddess brings his usual easy-going style of writing and friendly approach to learning new things.

As someone dedicated to the Dark Goddess in all her guises, I found this book tremendously helpful in deepening my connection with the Morrighan. There are other books on this goddess, but none lay out the information in a way that's not only scholarly, but easily accessible as for all. I felt like I could immediately put to use the information in each section as I turned the pages.

As a grimoire, Penczak shares his own personal rituals and insights which would be very helpful for folks just getting to know this mysterious goddess.

The Morrighan is not for the faint of heart. Those who approach her must do so with strength and heartfelt daring. This is exactly the type of book that can help you cultivate those things for a lifetime.

The Case of the Troubled Trustee, by Erle Stanley Gardner

The 'Foreword' in this 1965 book is dedicated to Leopold Breitenecker M.D., Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna. Too few people appreciate the importance of legal medicine or its ramifications. It can decide questions that affect insurance or about the circumstances of death (which was the wound of entrance and which was the wound of exit. An expert in forensic medicine can give answers and also demonstrate why his answers are correct.

Kerry Dutton visits Perry Mason for legal consultations. Templeton Ellis, the father of Desere Ellis, set up a spend-thrift trust. Kerry Dutton would dole out money on a monthly basis to Desere because her father disapproved of her friends: long-haired, bearded, left-wing idealists who tapped into Desere's funds. Dutton had held back and mingled some stocks in his name as trustee, and must make an accounting in a few months (Dutton is in love with the younger Desire). When Desere realizes her inheritance is about used up she wishes she had been less extravagant. Desere plans to take business courses to make a living (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3 a stockbroker explains why good news is printed about an oil company that had been on the decline: to raise its price before a proxy fight! Since this stock had been owned in Desere's trust, Fred Hedley sees a tangible fortune for spending. [There is an obvious lesson here warning young people to be careful in picking their friends.]

Perry calls Paul Drake to investigate Kerry Dutton (Paul drives an older car that blends in with traffic). Jarvis Reader shows up to complain about Kerry Dutton and his earlier sale of that oil stock; he wants an apology (Chapter 4). Drake follows Dutton to Desere Ellis' apartment, Hedley shows up and there's a fight; the police arrive, but Dutton has left. Drake and his men track Dutton so Perry and Della can talk to him (Chapter 8). Their talk is interrupted when the police show up and arrest Dutton for murder! Drake calls Perry to tell him that a body was found at the golf club that Dutton visited last night. Perry visits Dutton in jail, and listens to his story. Perry tells him how a jury would view his actions (Chapter 12). Dutton admits he found his gun by the body, picked it up, then discarded it by the road. Perry tells Dutton he isn't telling all of the facts. Perry then interviews Desere to hear her story. Drake gives a report on the victim Rodger Palmer, and his connection to Jarvis Reader and his oil company (Chapter 14). Perry faces a difficult battle in court, given the prosecution's theory and what his client has said (Chapter 15). Then a surprise witness shows up who may save Perry's client (Chapter 17). Chapter 18 has the testimony of Kerry Dutton, and his cross-examination by Hamilton Burger. Dutton makes damaging admissions about selling and buying the oil stock.

Hamilton Burger questioned the reliability of that surprise witness (Chapter 19). Perry realizes that more investigation is needed. Hamilton Burger questions Paul Drake on his economic involvement with Perry Mason (Chapter 22). The newspapers report that the murdered man, Rodger Palmer, had once been a suspect in two murder cases; a coincidence. Perry notices something, and puts an anonymous ad in the night edition, with a telephone number that will be answered by an operative of Paul Drake. This trap snares someone who shoots when discovered, flees, but is trapped by a police roadblock. The solution frees Dutton. [This is a very interesting story, but the ending came as a complete surprise to me.]

Troubled Trustee & Up for Grabs, Erle Stanley Gardner

Erle Stanley Gardner was once "the World's Greatest Author" as his novels outsold the combined totals of his rivals. Gardner wrote the "Perry Mason" novels and other works. Gardner and others formed "The Court of Last Resort" to investigate the wrongfully convicted. The background tells of the era, the monetary figures date these stories. Gardner's stories warned of the dangers of invalid eyewitness identification, drawing the wrong conclusions from circumstantial evidence (guilt by inference), or prematurely accusing a suspect before all the evidence was gathered and evaluated. While ballistics can identify the gun that fired a bullet it cannot tell when it was fired (before or after the crime). "Perry Mason" advised his clients to never lie to the police, it was better to say nothing except call for a lawyer.

"The Troubled Trustee" (1965) starts when a trustee visits Perry to ask for legal advice about commingled funds. [Its not what you think.] This oil investment has jumped in value. Later a dead man is found, shot with the trustee's gun. It looks bad for Perry's client until a new witness is found. The murdered man had been a suspect in two murder cases. Perry puts a blind ad in a newspaper and snares a suspect. This solution frees Perry's client.

"Up for Grabs" (1964) begins when an insurance company owner hires Lam to investigate a whiplash injury claim. Lam will visit a dude ranch to observe the actions of the plaintiff. Someone takes home movies at this dude ranch where people are encouraged to overexert themselves. Police Sergeant Sellers gets involved in this scam investigation.

About the Author
Carol Shaw Austad is a clinical psychologist who lives in New Britain, CT. She grew up in Waterbury, CT and attended the University of Connecticut. She graduated with a B.A. in psychology from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. During the time she lived in Canada, she was deeply impressed with the health care system rendered by the Canadian government. This experience had a great impact upon her thinking about health care and psychotherapy. Austad received her Ph.D. from the University of North Texas where she obtained instruction in long-term psychodynamic therapy from a number of supervisors. She completed an internship at Connecticut Valley Hospital, a state institute for the chronically mentally ill, worked at a private psychiatric hospital for a year, and for a staff model health maintenance organization, Community Health Care Plan, in New Haven CT. After five years as a managed care psychologist she assumed a full term position at Central Connecticut State University while maintaining a part time position in the HMO. Currently, she is a Full Professor at CCSU and teaches psychology. Austad is the co-editor of “Psychotherapy in Managed Health Care: The Optimal Use of Time and Resources” and a book about ethics, psychotherapy, and managed care entitled “Is Long-term Psychotherapy Ethical in an Era of Managed Care" published by Jossey Bass.

I'm a senior psychology major and I thought I'd heard everything there was to know about all the different psychological theories until I had to buy this textbook for a counseling theories class. Carol Austad goes into great detail regarding each school of counseling.
