Another ho-hum effort

As a professional philosopher with nearly 30 years of teaching experience at the college level I have taught numerous sections of general and applied ethics. During that time I have used several different texts and have read or perused countless more. Texts in applied ethics are readily available. Every major textbook publisher seemingly offers several. In determining whether or not to consider a text for adoption, several criteria come into play:

1. Does the text cover the major topics in the area? The Mappes and Zembaty text does this. However, so do most other applied ethics texts. And some of them have done a better job of keeping up with the current "hot" topics as well as some of the more recent articles on these topics.

2. Does the selection of articles for anthologization display a balance, with both (and in some cases all) viewpoints being fairly represented? Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a pretty decent job, but so do a lot of other anthologies.

3. Are there issues that I as the instructor consider relevant but that are not covered by most applied ethics texts? Of course, each instructor will have to answer this for himself or herself, so one's opinion is going to be somewhat subjective. Mappes and Zembaty have chosen to play it safe on this one and contain little that cannot be found in other anthologies.

4. Are there helpful overviews of each topic written by the editors/authors of the text? Here is one area where the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a better job than most. Each of the issues is preceded by an introduction of several pages in which the options are clearly spelled out.

5. Is the price right? Let's face it. Textbooks are far too expensive and we would all like them to be cheaper. A few have a cost that is reasonable. Some are sky-high. Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology falls somewhere in the middle. However, one can probably find as good if not better an anthology in applied ethics that retails new for $20 less.

All in all, this is a very middling text. Therefore, it's worth three stars.

An average applied ethics text

Having taught philosophy for nearly 30 years I've perused many texts in applied ethics. In evaluating a text, I apply several criteria.

1. Does the text cover the major topics? The Mappes and Zembaty text does this. But so do most other applied ethics texts.

Camille Colatosti is Dean of Institutional Assessment and Graduate Studies at Berklee College of Music. Formerly, she chaired Berklee s Liberal Arts Department. Camille serves as a leader of the Consortium for the Liberal Education of Artists, as well as a peer evaluator for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and for the Higher Learning Commission. She earned her PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and is the author of Stopping Sexual Harassment. She lives in Boston and northern Michigan.

Colatosti's interviews gives us an intimate look at an eclectic group of artists - poets, fine artists, musicians, dancers, and more - and delves into their artistic journeys, what motivates and inspires them to create, and their varied perspectives on what it is to be an artist. It's a good read!

Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).

Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering", "Communication Systems with MATLAB", "Fundamentals of Communication Systems", and "Digital Communications". His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Gerhard Bauch received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Munich University of Technology (TUM) in 1995 and 2001, respectively, and the Diplom-Volkswirt degree from FernUniversitaet Hagen in 2001. In 1996, he was with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From 1996-2001 he was member of scientific staff at Munich University of Technology (TUM). In 1998 and 1999 he was visiting researcher at AT&T Labs Research, Florham Park, NJ, USA. In 2002 he joined DoCoMo Euro-Labs, Munich, Germany, where he has been managing the Advanced Radio Transmission Group. In 2007 he was additionally appointed Research Fellow of DoCoMo Euro-Labs. From 2003-2008 he was an adjunct professor at Munich University of Technology. In 2007 he was a visiting professor teaching courses at the University of Udine in Italy and at the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt in Austria. Since February 2009 he has been a full professor at the Universit�t der Bundeswehr Munich.

Not something I reach for as often...

This is one of those books that can be useful, but only in a limited way. In particular, I am biased towards books that not only instruct but can serve as future reference, and this book leaves you wanting in that area.

First, the positives. This book guides you step by step, enabling more capabilities as you go along. It is moderately paced and touches many essential topics in communications. Problems and solutions are clearly presented.

There are some negatives, however. The communication systems are not that "contemporary." For example, key technologies such as OFDM are treated very sparingly. Furthermore, some of the Matlab code is not as useful as it seems at first sight.

If you are a student wishing to learn some basic fundamentals in communications while testing out the theory in Matlab, then this book can certainly be useful. If you want a good treatment of more contemporary systems such as OFDM, then this book is not for you. You can get some useful information initially, but the book's value as a reference is limited. Soon you may find yourself like me and not be reaching for it that much.

Hands-on learning resource, excellent updates

This book is not meant to be a complete communications reference, but instead delivers some great hands-on exercises to accompany a standard comms text. The authors state in the preface "The objective of this book is to serve as a companion or supplement to any of the comprehensive textbooks in communications systems"

This book provides three entirely new chapters: "Multicarrier Modulation and OFDM" (chapter 8), "Transmission Through Wireless Channels" (chapter 9), and "Multiple Antenna Systems"(chapter 11). Chapter 9 is a great overall addition to the book because it really rounds out the building blocks that the authors provide for modeling and simulation of communications systems. 8 and 9 cover OFDM and MIMO, specific techniques that are becoming very prevalent in modern standards such as LTE, 802.11, DVB-T2 and 802.16. Another significant update is the sections on LDPC and turbocodes in chapter 10 ("Capacity and Coding").

This book gives very brief technical overview and then dives straight into the source code. The authors give the readers great building blocks to implement their own models and expect that the readers will consult their favorite texts for more technical detail.

Un-freaking-believable... I tried it, it works

I was in a bit of a financial bind this week - namely, the rent was seriously late. I was hating life. I don't like to be late with my rent and I was saving every penny to get caught up.

In saying this, I was a bit hesitant about creating a servitor under such a stressful situation. Damon often recommends that you don't lust after the results, and I was just about as lustful as they come. Lustful-for-rent-money was my middle name. Despite this feeling of desperation, I gave it go anyway.

The servitor I created would help me get the remaining $650 I needed to pay the rest of the rent -- within 2 days. I'm self-employed so it's possible to earn big lump sums like this. But business had been super slow. My rationale mind wasn't 100% sold on the fact that I could get that money in a couple of days. But my magickal mind told me don't worry about 'how' the money comes. Just let the servitor do the work.

Admittedly, I followed the steps in this book a little sloppily. I mean I rushed through it, but I gave what felt like a good emotional push. The servitor felt very real in my atmosphere.

On Day 1, the day I created the servitor, I made $200. On Day 2, I made $460. The grand total... $660. The really crazy part is that one client tipped me $200 for my work. I'm a designer, and nobody tips a designer, let alone tips them $200 because they liked the work. That was the first time it ever happened, and I was shocked.

I always felt like servitor magick would be a good fit for me, and apparently it is. Now that the rent is paid-in-full, I'm already thinking of my next servitor. And the next one. And the next one. (NY Times bestseller list, here I come!)

A culmination of Work--Simple, but not easy.

My Work has forever changed because of the Works provided by the Gallery of Magick. Just read my other reviews for their works to see. Because of this, this volume is, I feel, one not to be ingested until a Worker has built up faith and trust in their own processes. I tell you, had I not found success with other portions of my Work, the idea of servitors as presented by the Author would have seemed too simple, and I would not have been able to produce results.

For me, a person steeped in the Western scientific "physical world only" tradition, I would not have been able to believe I could actually, truly Create Something that really Existed and that worked. I had to try the Words of Power. I had to try the Shem Angel magick. I had to feel the changes from the 72 Sigils. I had to seduce.

The day this book came out, I read it's description and bought it with butterflies in my soul. I knew, if I pulled off what this book talked about, I would never, ever be the same. I also knew, if I failed, then I would experience a terrible disillusionment and a loss of faith in myself and how I perceive Reality.

I read it. I denied its simplicity. I read it again, and my mind was filled with possibilities, ideas and events and purposes maybe even the occult community hasn't even thought up before. But how could they be achieved? How could it be so simple? I tabled the book for 2 weeks.

My mind, my heart, my soul kept bringing this book back to my consciousness. "Screw it. I might as well try," said I.

The results were precisely what I wanted, but the process of their realization blew my mind.

The Author gives a formula for creating any servitor: designate its purpose, appearance, powers, timing, location, calling, and fatal flaw. Create its sigil. Empower it. You're done. He speaks to each of these concepts, advising and delineating boundaries. Defines problems. Encourages imagination.

I would have understood it a year ago, but I never would have believed I could do it. I needed more time with my own successes. That's why I said it wasn't easy: not that the content was difficult, but that I needed to be ready to really commit.

Be careful with this work. Change will come. Caveat emptor.

The only servitor book you'll ever need...

This is my first Damon Brand review, but I can say with certainty that this book is perhaps one of the best prints on servitor magick around. His instructions (or rather, outlines) are clear and concise, followed by his personal touches on how to go about planning to bring your servitor to life. As someone whose always had trouble with creating my servitors, this book had all of the answers to my problems. Is it original in the sense that it brings a whole new method to the table? Not so much. However, there were a few ideas on where to place servitors that I found genuinely unique and new. This book is beginner friendly but can also be used by people with more experience. I believe what makes this book great is that the material is easy to read and to digest as is with most of his other books.

My only complaint, if that, was that some of the pages in my copy of the book began running out of ink. The text is legible but my OCD began kicking in when comparing one half of the page with the other. Half of it was light gray while the other was black. I hope that no one else's copies had this problem!

Regardless, the information is there and I highly recommend this book to others looking to use servitors.

Still "honorable" - an enduring classic and a great ride.

This my favorite of all of Le Carre's works. I find it worth re-reading every few years. The main character is very well-developed and engaging. The moral, political and philosophical issues raised are timeless, and are not given facile, obvious solutions. I consider a book a classic if I benefit and have a new experience even in re-reading it. The Holourable Schoolboy always rewards my return visits.

The novel begins at a leisurely pace and accelerates throughout as good thrillers tend to do. It can be enjoyed as a thriller because it's a great ride. I read it as quickly as possible the first time. Now, I savor it.

Evocative and engrossing as always

This is the second book in the Karla series and for my review please see the final of the trilogy, Smiley's People.

This is my third copy of this work, a present from my youngest son who notes on the fly-leaf that it, in it s turn, is "A replacement for a well-used book." This copy is already six years old and is displaying evidence of many re-readings, as do all my "Smiley" series!

Of course le Carré, as usual in his craft, builds magnificent tension and intrigue whilst evoking Hong Kong ("Honkers") into a reality for the readers who have never been there, or a fond recollected memory for those who have. His usual strong character and ambience building is in evidence again in this story but, for me, the hero of this book is not the real one (The Honorable Gerald Westerby, "Horse Writer" and hack and amazingly resourceful "London Occasional" spy) but a beautifully crafted incidental persona called Fawn.

Sharing the "babysitting" (body guarding) of George Smiley with Peter Guillam, Fawn is described as a hovering dark-eyed factotum ... a sleek diminutive creature, who, when Smiley does one of his usual disappearing acts and leaves Fawn behind - or gives him the slip - Fawn seems to literally pine for his master. Guillam discovers him in his little den one evening is shocked to find Fawn "in a near-foetal crouch, winding a handkerchief around and round his thumb like a ligature, in order to hurt himself".
The odorous Roddy Martingdale, a single and very singular senior Civil Servant is accompanying Peter and Smiley after a secret meeting when Fawn flutters up, Crying out for his `Chief' and waving a note. He is intercepted by Peter and the note is confiscated and Fawn sent away in disgrace for creating a fuss, with Peter Guillam hissing"....bloody little drama queen racing around London in your gym shoes!" Martingdale is entranced, quite breathless with excitement... "What are darling little creature ... are all spies as pretty as that ... how positively Venetian. I shall volunteer at once!"

Yet Fawn's fellow Departmental "heavies" are afraid of him, with good reason ... as the story unfolds in the finale, le Carré produces, in a few scant and clever lines, a powerful image that reflects Fawn's sinister skills and his even more sinister role in the story's ending that is shortly to follow. It is decided to send the taut and impatient Fawn into the field, into the final action ..."Where Fawn had stood, two squash-balls slowly rolled a distance before coming to a halt. "God help us all", somebody murmured fervently."

Le Carre's imagination was stretched and enriched from birth by his "trickster" father. He admits to being influenced by the writing of Ernest Hemingway and other post war American writers. He employs "third eye" narrative in "Schoolboy" as Hemingway in the "Green Hills of Africa" and Conrad in "Heart of Darkness". He notes in the "Foreword" it is a "good view" for reportage as the "Honourable Schoolboy" is a "journalistic" effort, written on location and from his life events during thirteen years of travel in Southeast Asia.

LeCarre' takes us from Hong Kong to Cambodia and back following the exploits of Jerry Wetherby (leCarre's alter ego who dies in the end never to appear again in le Carre's writings.) It took leCarre' 13 years to track his exploits through SE Asia (from age 43-57) during the era of the Vietnam War. It was only the second of Smiley's "Karla" trilogy and likely the beginning of a new world view that he would present in the third book of Karla. He persisted and wrote the "third" volume and several other novels. He is 82 today and still denying interviews.

The reader meets too many characters in "Schoolboy", (15 main) and (25 supporting), whom le Carre' weaves into a complex but narrowing tale. The novel's end centers on a broken opium deal with some unlikley participants and a broken romance. The reader needs a scorecard to track the characters and a lexicon to interpret the jargon. Both are available on Wikipedia under the book title.

"Loneliness"and "isolation" are the major themes of the novel in a world of "relative morality" without any real consequences, except death for betrayal of the state. The portrayal is a "cold war" nihilist slice of life. The world view was simple by comparison to current standards. The enemy then was "global socialism". Today it is "regional religious fascism" abroad, and "national socialism" at home with "technology" and "media" accelerating social decay in the Western World.

Le Carre's world seems quaint by today's standards. Our contemporary best sellers resort to fantasy and vampires (living dead). Spiritual unity as a topic is becoming discouraged in daily discourse and outlawed in schools. Morality is no longer based on an "Inner Voice" but whatever makes you feel good, which ironically is listening to the "Inner Voice".

"The Honourable Schoolboy" sets the stage for where we are today and leaves us with the question of "where are we headed from here?"

Love, love LOVE

This is my favorite of the series, and the most beautiful. These books keep me awake at night because as tired as I was, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. All the books are like that. This one left me in happy tears. Truly an amazing, wickedly twisted and talented writer that has quickly become my favorite.

Nick and Grace - I am so hooked!

I can not get enough of Nick and Grace. They are such a unique couple and so HOT together. As their life together moves along there are so many surprises for the reader. I did not see some of the surprises coming in this one. I am totally in love with this series and wait with baited breath for the next one!

Lists for Living...is so much fun and actually has real advice for your life.

This book was given to me as a gift from my sister. If Oprah Winfrey had her book list from the Oprah Show, I think Myrna Ossin would be a guest on that show. She clearly has a vast wealth of knowledge of lists for your life. Everyone can use this book and learn from it. It is not only an archive of to-do’s lists, it is like having access to a brain of someone who thinks of everything. It was just fun to read cover to cover. I gave Lists for Living as a gift to my mother-in-law and she couldn’t stop talking about it. She even said, she learned “she should always put her contact information on the inside of her suitcase, not just the outside.” It's a surprisingly good resource book.

Lists for Living is a great book, easy read and will always be useful to me. A++

There is a lot of information out there on living, self-help, what to do, life recommendations etc. However, not as comprehensive as List for Living. The book is an easy read, the tips are useful and do help enforce everyday living. If you read the book, you will certainly find yourself reading more pages that you anticipated, just cannot seem to put it down. I highly recommend Lists for Living to anyone and any age and at any point in your life. A+++
